The passage in English

Among them, and the first I met on the Way of God, is Abū Jaʿfar al-ʿUraynī (may God be pleased with him). He came to us at Seville when I was first entering upon the knowledge of this noble Way, and I was the first to hasten to him. I went in to him and found a man known for his invocation (dhikr). I told him my name, and he knew what I needed from him. He said to me: “You have resolved upon the Way of God, exalted is He?” I answered: “As for the servant, he is resolved; but it is God who makes firm.” Then he said to me: “Shut the door, cut off the secondary causes, and sit with the ascetics (ruhhāb), and God will speak to you without a veil.” I acted on this until an opening came to me. He was an unlettered Bedouin who could neither write nor reckon, yet when he spoke on the science of divine unity (tawḥīd), it was enough for you simply to listen.
