Epilogue

1000

az ān gulshan giriftam shamma-ʾī bāz

nihādam nām-i ū-rā Gulshan-i rāz

[Epilogue.] From that rose-garden I have taken a breath, and named it the Rose-garden of the Secret (Gulshan-i rāz).

1001

dar-ū az rāz-hā gul-hā shikufta-st

ki tā aknūn kasī dīgar na-gufta-st

In it, from secrets, roses have opened such as no one else has told until now.

1002

zabān-i sawsan-i ū jumla gūyā-st

ʿuyūn-i nargis-i ū jumla bīnā-st

The tongues of its lilies are all speaking; the eyes of its narcissi are all seeing.

1003

taʾammul kun ba-chashm-i dil yakāyak

ki tā bar-khīzad az pīsh-i tu īn shakk

Consider them one by one with the eye of the heart, so that this doubt may rise from before you.

1004

bi-bīn manqūl u maʿqūl u ḥaqāyiq

muṣaffā karda dar ʿilm-i daqāʾiq

See what is transmitted and what is reasoned, and the realities, refined in the science of subtle points.

1005

ba-chashm-i munkirī ma-ngar dar-ū khvār

ki gul-hā gardad andar chashm-i tu khār

Do not look upon it with a denier's eye as contemptible, lest the roses become thorns in your eye.

1006

nishān-i nā-shināsī nā-sipāsī-st

shināsāʾī-yi ḥaqq dar ḥaqq shināsī-st

The sign of not knowing is ingratitude; knowing the Real lies in acknowledging His right (ḥaqq-shināsī).

1007

gharaḍ z-īn jumla ān tā-gar kunad yād

ʿazīzī gūyad-am raḥmat bar-ū bād

My aim in all this is that some dear one, should he remember, may say of me: mercy be upon him!

Whinfield's margin. Other manuscripts reads تاکزما for تاگر.

1008

ba-nām-i khvīsh kardam khatm u pāyān

ilāhī ʿāqibat maḥmūd gardān

With my own name I have made the seal and the end: O God, make the outcome praiseworthy (maḥmūd, also the poet's own name).
