The Verbs of Approximation (kāda and its sisters)

أَفْعَالُ الْمُقَارَبَةِ

Verses 164–173 · chapter 12 of 78

This chapter treats a group of verbs that work like kāna, taking a subject in the nominative and a predicate in the accusative position, where the predicate is normally a clause headed by an imperfect (muḍāriʿ) verb. The verbs fall into three groups: verbs of nearness (kāda, karaba, awshaka), verbs of hope (ʿasā, ḥarā, ikhlawlaqa), and verbs of commencement (anshaʾa, ṭafiqa, jaʿala, akhadha, ʿaliqa). The chapter sets out when the predicate takes an and when it must not, which derived forms these verbs have, when ʿasā and its like stand complete with an yafʿala, and how ʿasā behaves after a preceding noun and with pronoun suffixes.

The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. Kāda and ʿasā are like kāna [they put the subject in the nominative and the predicate in the accusative position]; but a predicate of these two that is anything other than an imperfect verb is rare. [kāda zaydun yaqūmu 'Zayd was about to stand'; ʿasā zaydun an yaqūma 'perhaps Zayd will stand'.]

Scanned by rule, not by a model. The vowelled text is read as it is pronounced, as Ibn Jinnī says scansion must be: doubled letters count twice, tanwīn adds an n, long vowels lengthen, the connecting alif drops inside the line, the article's l merges into a sun letter, and the last vowel of a line is drawn out. The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. A verse that does not fit it is marked 'not scanned'; nothing is guessed. Vowels scanned: AI vowelling (no vowelled edition is available to us).

Allow fatḥa and kasra on the sīn in forms like ʿasaytu [when ʿasā takes a nominative pronoun of the first or second person, or the feminine plural nūn: ʿasaytu / ʿasītu; compare Q 47:22 fa-hal ʿasaytum, also read ʿasītum]; and the preference for fatḥa is known.

AI note on the transcription: وَانْتِقَا الْفَتْحِ زُكِنْ: the transcription has انتفا (intifāʾ 'absence') for انتقا (intiqāʾ 'selection'). This is a dotting slip. With انتفا the hemistich would deny the fatḥa that the first half has just allowed, and the fatḥa is in fact the better-known and preferred form.
