Ẓanna and Its Sisters

ظَنَّ وَأَخَوَاتُهَا

Verses 206–219 · chapter 15 of 78

This chapter covers the verbs that enter on a subject and predicate and put both in the accusative as two objects. These are the verbs of the heart (cognition and opinion) and the verbs of transformation. It explains when the heart verbs may be suspended (taʿlīq) or cancelled (ilghāʾ), when certain of them take only one object, when their objects may be dropped, and when the verb qāla 'to say' is treated like ẓanna.

The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 206–208Arabic

هذا هو القسم الثالث من الأفعال الناسخة للابتداء وهو ظن وأخواتها

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 2448 · vol. 2, p. 27 ↗

The same holds for taʿallam [imperative only]. For the forms other than the past of all the other verbs [present, imperative, verbal noun, participles], assign every rule that is known for the past [e.g. aẓunnu zaydan qāʾiman, 'I think Zayd standing'; anā ẓānnun zaydan qāʾiman].
