Section on law ('if')
فَصْلُ لَوْ
Verses 709–711 · chapter 59 of 78
This section treats the conditional particle law. It normally sets up a condition in past time, and it is only rarely used for the future. Like in, it is followed only by a verb, though it may be followed by anna. A present-tense (muḍāriʿ) verb placed after it takes on past meaning. AI

The vowelled text is read as it is pronounced, as Ibn Jinnī says scansion must be: doubled letters count twice, tanwīn adds an n, long vowels lengthen, the connecting alif drops inside the line, the article's l merges into a sun letter, and the last vowel of a line is drawn out. The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. A verse that does not fit it is marked 'not scanned'; nothing is guessed. Vowels scanned: AI vowelling (no vowelled edition is available to us).

Law is a particle of condition in past [time]. It is rare for it to be followed by [a verb with] future [meaning], but this is accepted. [In that case it means the same as in 'if', e.g. wa-l-yakhsha lladhīna law tarakū min khalfihim dhurriyyatan ḍiʿāfan 'and let those fear who, if they were to leave weak offspring behind them…' (Q 4:9).]

Law is like in in being restricted to the verb [so only a verb, stated or understood, follows it]. However, anna may be joined to it, as in law anna Zaydan qāʾimun la-qumtu 'if Zayd were standing, I would have stood', and law annahum ṣabarū 'if they had been patient' (Q 49:5).

If a muḍāriʿ verb follows law, its meaning is turned to the past, as in law yafī kafā 'had he kept faith, it would have been enough' [yafī is present in form and past in meaning].
