The commentators side by side

One passage at a time. Each column is a commentator; each row gathers the comments on the same words, so readings and emphases can be compared.

So he (God bless him and give him peace), in repeating this verse [Q 5:118], was upon tremendous knowledge from God. Whoever recites this verse, let him recite it in this way; otherwise, silence is more fitting for him. When God grants the servant success in uttering some matter, He grants him success in it only when He has already willed to answer him in it and to fulfill his need. So let no one consider slow [to arrive] what is contained in that for which he has been granted success. Rather, let him persevere with this verse in all his states, as the Messenger of God (God bless him and give him peace) persevered with it, until he hears the answer with his ear or with his hearing, however you wish [to put it], or however God makes you hear [it]. If He requites you for the asking of the tongue, He makes you hear with your ear; and if He requites you for the meaning, He makes you hear with your hearing.

The servant [the commentator] said: I found nothing to add beyond what the Shaykh explained of this verse in the Muḥammadan-Jesus-like intimate discourse (al-munājāt al-muḥammadiyya al-ʿīsawiyya), for he fulfilled its due interpretation, and with the excellence of his exposition established its confirmation.

Ibn Turka

— meaning knowledge of the place of every thing and the loci of its realization and establishment, and what that entails of knowledge of the ordering of the response to his supplication and of all other attributes and rulings absolutely. The etiquette of supplication is the symbol of its being answered ("whoever recites, let him recite thus") by means of such detailed experiential-cognitive verification (taḥaqquq ʿilmī shuhūdī tafṣīlī), as has been explained, as an inheritance from the Seal-Presence (ḥaḍra khātimiyya). And in this statement is an intimation that the Shaykh himself recited it with this very recitation, just as his contenting himself with the pronoun and with the blessing [upon the Prophet] is an indication that the two Messengers were granted this aforementioned source-status (maṣdariyya) only through the auspicious graces of the Seal-perfection (al-kamāl al-khatmī) which belongs, in essence, to Muhammad, and, derivatively, in one respect, to Jesus.

in accordance with what he indicated in equating the two expressions by his saying: "however you wish, or however God causes you to hear [it]" — that is, the answer, as the realization of the recompense, is contingent upon the asker's petition, made either by the tongue of the root of his receptivity (qābiliyya) and his cosmic thing-ness (shayʾiyya), or by the tongue of his divine auditory all-comprehensiveness (jamʿiyya samʿiyya). This too is among the rulings of that duality comprised within this Word. Then you should know here that, among the effects of what the Prophetic Word comprises of the matter of duality, and of its magnificent fruits — which are harvested only from the tree of prophecy (nubuwwa) when it reaches maturity and at the time its purpose is attained — is the knowledge of the two groups, upon which rests the point of distinction (faṣl al-tafriqa) and the foundations of the rulings of differentiation; and it is that by which the ranks of the prophets differ when ascending to the degrees of its perfection in the matter of prophecy. Hence you see that it is by this that he matched the Seal-taste (al-dhawq al-khatmī), and upon it he corresponded to the point of the completion of prophecy, in that the Seal took to repeating it until it was answered. And it is as though you have already been alerted, in the preceding indications (talwīḥāt), to what would inform you of the root of this subtle point, at the point of verifying the final outcome of the matter of multiplicity, upon which the inclination of its steward (qahramān) in duality came to rest. So let that be kept in mind, for through it is disclosed, of the magnificent subtleties, what customary expression finds difficult to indicate by any sort of the recognized modes of signification among the masters of formal expression (arbāb al-rusūm). Then he proceeded to what follows, saying: The Facet of the Merciful Wisdom in the Word of Solomon.

- the spiritual one, for that correspondence. And it is not hidden that the apparent [reading] would be to say 'however he wished' or 'however God caused him to hear,' so the change of style is either due to the shift from the third person to direct address, or due to an implied saying - that is, he hears with his ear, it being said to him: 'however you wished the response by the request of the tongue, literally or by its meaning, however you wished, God will cause you to hear' - it must be that this is a recompense to you by it, and His responding to you by what suits your state. For if He requites you by your request with the tongue, He causes you to hear with your ear; and if He requites you by the meaning, He causes you to hear with your hearing.
