Quotes the Quran 19:57 · text of the quotation verified against Tanzil

Highness is two relations: highness of place and highness of rank. As for highness of place: "And We raised him up to a high place" [Q 19:57]. The highest of places is the place upon which the millstone of the world of the spheres turns, namely the sphere of the sun, and in it is the station of the spirituality of Idrīs. Beneath it are seven spheres and above it are seven spheres, and it is the fifteenth. That which is above it is the sphere of the Red [planet, Mars], the sphere of Jupiter, the sphere of Kaywān [Saturn], the sphere of the [lunar] mansions, the starless (atlas) sphere, [which is] the sphere of the zodiacal constellations, the sphere of the Footstool, and the sphere of the Throne. That which is below it is the sphere of Venus, the sphere of the Scribe [Mercury], the sphere of the moon, the globe of ether, the globe of air, the globe of water, and the globe of earth. So inasmuch as it is the pole of the spheres, it is lofty in place. As for highness of rank, it belongs to us, I mean the Muhammadans.

Quotes the Quran 87:1 · text of the quotation verified against Tanzil

He, exalted is He, said: "You are the uppermost, and God is with you" [Q 47:35], in this highness, while He is exalted above place, not above station. And since the souls of the workers among us became fearful, He followed the withness with His words: "and He will never deprive you of [the reward of] your works" [Q 47:35]. For work seeks place and knowledge seeks station; so He combined for us the two elevations: highness of place through work and highness of station through knowledge. Then He said, declaring [Him] incomparable with respect to the sharing [implied] by the withness: "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Q 87:1], [that is,] above this sharing in meaning. And among the most wondrous of matters is that the human being is the highest of existents, I mean the perfect human, and yet highness is attributed to him only derivatively, either through place or through station, which is rank.

So his elevation is not his by virtue of his own self. He is the high [one] by the elevation of place and of rank; the elevation thus belongs to these two [and not to him]. The elevation of place is like [the verse] "The All-Merciful sat upon the Throne" [Q 20:5], and that is the highest of places. The elevation of rank is [like the verses] "Everything is perishing except His face" [Q 28:88], and "To Him the whole affair is returned" [Q 11:123], and "Is there a god along with God?" [cf. Q 27:60–64]. When God (exalted is He) said, "And We raised him to a high place" [Q 19:57], He made "high" an attribute of the place. [And when He said,] "And when your Lord said to the angels, 'I am placing in the earth a vicegerent'" [Q 2:30], this is the elevation of rank. And He said concerning the angels, "Have you grown arrogant, or are you among the lofty ones?" [Q 38:75], thus attributing elevation to [certain of] the angels. Had it been due to their being angels, all the angels would have been included in this elevation.

So since it does not include all of them, even though they share in the definition of angelhood, we knew that this is the highness of rank with God. Likewise the vicegerents among humankind: were their highness through vicegerency an essential highness, it would belong to every human being. So since it does not include all, we knew that that highness belongs to rank. And among His most beautiful Names is the High (al-ʿAlī). [High] over whom, when there is nothing there but He? So He is the High through His Essence. Or [high] above what, when it is nothing but He? So His highness is through Himself. And He, in respect of existence, is the very entity of the existents.
