Then the other unveiling comes, and our forms become manifest to you in Him. Some of us become manifest to others in the Real, so some of us know others, and some of us are distinguished from others. Among us are those who know that it is in the Real that this knowledge of ours, through ourselves, came about. Among us are those who are ignorant of the presence in which this knowledge through ourselves came about. 'I seek refuge in God lest I be among the ignorant' [Q 2:67].

The servant says: In the first disclosure, I witnessed the Real within my own theaters (majālī): the realities of the cosmos and the mirrors of its loci of manifestation according to them, so that the Witness and the Witnessed were both the Real. In this witnessing there are two levels for those who hold them: The first is that the Real is the Existent Witnessed within the realities of the cosmos and the entities of the originated things, which are loci of manifestation for the Real, existing in their own entities; the Real became manifest by them and within them and according to them, a certain mode of manifestation and a kind of self-disclosure. In the second: the Real is likewise the Existent Witnessed within mirrors not existing in their own entities, but rather remaining in their entitative nonexistence and cognitive existence; the one Real Existence extended over them became manifest according to their specific characteristics and receptivities. Thus the one Real Existence became manifest through these different loci of manifestation, with differing forms - so the Witnessed Existent in both acts of witnessing is the Real. As for the third disclosure, it gives [the understanding] that what is witnessed are the engravings of the entities of the cosmos, their forms and their likenesses, within the mirror of the one Real Existence; the Existent is the Real, witnessed in the forms of His relations (nisab) and the engravings of His essential, entitative affairs (shuʾūn) and states - these, I mean the relations and affairs which are the entities of the cosmos, did not transfer from essential knowledge into concrete entity, but rather produced effects within the mirror of the Real Existence - insofar as it is receptive and fit for those effects - certain configurations and forms corresponding to them. He - may God be pleased with him - said:

This disclosure is the disclosure of the station of distinction (farq) after gathering (jamʿ), and it is called "the gathering of gathering" (jamʿ al-jamʿ) in respect of its gathering together gathering and distinction; it is the appearance of the forms of the entities in the mirror of the Real. In this respect, what is witnessed is creation, while the Real remains in His most protected glory (ʿizz) and His unseen (ghayb), which our Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, referred to metaphorically as "the Cloud" (al-ʿamāʾ), even though His existence is a mirror in which the world appears. At this appearance, some of us appear to others in the Presence of the Real's knowledge, and mutual recognition (taʿāruf) occurs among the entities in this Presence by virtue of correspondence (munāsaba), while mutual estrangement (tanākur) appears according to the absence of correspondence. What occurs of mutual estrangement and mutual recognition in the world of spirits—as he, peace and blessings upon him, indicated by his saying: "Spirits are conscripted troops; those among them that recognize one another become harmonious, and those that fail to recognize one another become discordant"—is a manifestation and result of that mutual recognition and estrangement that occur in the Presence of knowledge. And he only said:

which is the unveiling of the station of differentiation (farq) after unification (jamʿ), and is called the unification of unification (jamʿ al-jamʿ) in consideration of the fact that it unites unification with differentiation. So our forms become manifest to you within Him — i.e., within the Real, glory be to Him, and the mirror of His existence. (So some of us become manifest to others) in the mirror of existence

because the entities, in their state of fixity in the unseen of the Real, prior to their existence in knowledge and in the concrete, are not distinguished one from another; all of them are absorbed under the compulsion of essential Oneness (al-aḥadiyya al-dhātiyya), like the names and attributes, since there is no existence for anything therein at all, whether name, attribute, fixed entity, or otherwise—as he, peace and blessings upon him, said: "God was, and nothing was with Him," alerting us to this level. Consider, in the station of your spirit, the state of your realities and your universal knowledges: do you find any of them distinguished one from another, or from the essence of your spirit itself, until you descend to the station of your heart, where each universal becomes distinguished from the others, then each of them becomes further differentiated into its particulars therein, then it appears in the station of imagination given form as if sensory, then it appears in sense-perception? If you find in yourself what I have indicated, you are guided and you know the matter in Him in whose form you were created. And if you do not find in yourself what corresponds to this, you cannot gain access to the divine realities and their states. "And everyone is facilitated toward that for which he was created." Distinction in knowledge, too, occurs only in the heart-station, not the spirit-station. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

such that no bond of knowledge occurs between them according to the differentiation and mutual non-recognition occurring in the world of spirits, corresponding to what was in our preparednesses (istiʿdādāt) in the cognitive Presence. And when some of us come to know others — whether this knowledge occurs in the sleep of differentiation before unification or after it

within the Real. It becomes evident from this that [without this] some would not appear, nor be known, nor be distinguished from others. This disclosure is higher than the first, for it is the proximity attained through the supererogatory acts (qurb al-nawāfil), and it is called the station of distinction (farq) after gathering, and the gathering of gathering (jamʿ al-jamʿ).

i.e., among us is the one granted disclosure by the second disclosure, who is not veiled by creation from the Real, and so knows the creaturely multiplicity within the very Unitary Real Reality—and he is among the people of perfection (ahl al-kamāl). Majesty (al-jalāl) does not veil them from Beauty (al-jamāl), nor Beauty from Majesty, for the first disclosure is purely of Beauty; its possessor witnesses nothing therein but Beauty alone, while the entitative forms, their states, and determinations are His Names and Attributes—so he is veiled by Beauty from Majesty. And among them—i.e., among the people of the second disclosure—is one who is veiled by Majesty from Beauty, imagining the Presence, according to creation, as other [than the Real], and so is veiled by creation from the Real—I seek refuge in God from going astray after guidance. And do not suppose that the entitative existence in the manifest is truly identical with the unseen existence in the nonmanifest, such that you think the entities have transferred from knowledge to [concrete] entity, or have remained there [only]; nor that the Real Existence is merely extended over them so that He appears through their traces and marks; nor that they are existent loci of manifestation (maẕāhir) in which the Real has appeared. Rather, the entities are the nonmanifest aspects of the manifest forms, fixed in their being known, and their nonmanifestness perpetually appears and disappears. So their appearance is under the name of Light, and their manifest entitative existence, and their subsistence according to the eternal, everlasting cognitive form, is their unseen existence—so they are, in one single state, both manifest and nonmanifest, through one single Real Existence. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

al-Qayṣarī

That is, among us is one who knows that in the mirror of the Essence of the Real and the Presence of His knowledge this mutual knowledge occurred for us, i.e., our knowing one another by means of us—that is, by our entities being given that recognition by virtue of the correspondence occurring between them. And among us is one who is ignorant of that Presence and of the mutual recognition occurring among the entities, because of the veilings resulting from elemental genesis (al-nashʾa al-ʿunṣuriyya) and the stages through which the human entity passes in its appearance until it arrives at this alphabetic (human) form, as he said: "And I think she forgot covenants made at the sanctuary, and dwellings at whose separation she was not content." Since the first state is the condition of the people of perfection, the beloved ones, meant by it those whom the majesty (jalāl) of the Real does not veil from His beauty (jamāl), as the ones veiled by creation from the Real are veiled, nor does His beauty veil them from His majesty, as the ones veiled by the Real from creation are veiled—and they are the bewildered ones (al-mahyūmūn) who remain in absolute gathering (al-jamʿ al-muṭlaq)—while the second is the condition of the veiled, the rejected ones, those not cared for. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

i.e., of some of us by others — and these are the possessors of the second unveiling, which is the station of differentiation after unification, and what they witness are the forms of the fixed entities and their likenesses in the mirror of the true Existence, without our transferring from knowledge to concrete existence (al-ʿayn). Rather, these have an effect in the mirror of the true Existence by their receptivity and aptitude — not by those entities themselves [being] forms and likenesses, which the ignorant one supposes to be concretely existent existents

So they see the form of differentiation and know it as distinguished, some from others, but they do not know that it appeared in the mirror of the Real's existence. Taken from: ibnalarabi.com/fusus/qunawi.php. The OpenITI file's own header (#META# source) names this page: the text was copied from the Ibn ʿArabī website directed by Dr Mohamed Ali Haj Yousef. Every IAC-coded file used here names a page of that site in its header; barzakh is OpenITI's repository for texts awaiting integration into the corpus.

Licence: OpenITI distributes its texts under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0; ibnalarabi.com states © 1999–2024. The commentary itself is a classical work in the public domain; the edition behind the digital text is unidentified.

The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
