   Praise be to God, and peace upon those of His servants whom He has chosen: Muhammad and his pure family. To proceed: when I read the Tale of Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān, I found that, for all its marvels of spiritual discourse and profound allusions, it lacked any intimations pointing to the supreme stage. That stage is 'the Greatest Overwhelming' (al-ṭāmma al-kubrā). It is stored up in the divine scriptures, deposited in the symbols, and hidden in the tale of Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān. It is upon this stage that the stations of the Sufis and of the people of unveilings are built. Yet it is alluded to in the Epistle of Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān only at the very end of the work, where he says, 'And certain solitary individuals among men have emigrated to Him', and so on to the end of the book. I therefore wished to set forth something of that stage in a tale which I myself have named the Tale of the Occidental Exile, for certain of our noble brethren.    Yet, when night returned to the sky, we would climb up to the palace and look out over the open expanse, gazing through a small window. Now and then doves would come to us from the thickets of Yemen with news of how things stood in the sanctuary. At times Yemeni lightnings visited us, flashing from the right-hand, eastern side, and they told us of the night-visitants of Najd. In our delight they added longing upon longing, so that we yearned for the homeland and were filled with longing.

    فَلَمَّا انْقَطَعَتِ الْمَسَافَةُ وَانْقَرَضَ الطَّرِيقُ وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ مِنَ الشَّكْلِ الْمَخْرُوطِ فَرَأَيْتُ الْأَجْرَامَ الْعُلْوِيَّةَ وَاتَّصَلْتُ بِهَا سَمِعْتُ نَغَمَاتِهَا وَدَسْتَمَانَاتِهَا وَتَعَلَّمْتُ مِنْهَا أَشْيَاءَ وَأَصْوَاتُهَا تَقْرَعُ مَسْمَعِي كَأَنَّهَا صَوْتُ سِلْسِلَةٍ تُجَرُّ عَلَى صَخْرَةٍ صَمَّاءَ وَتَكَادُ تَنْقَطِعُ أَدْبَارِي وَتَنْصَرِمُ مَفَاصِلِي مِنْ لَذَّةِ مَا انْسَلَّ وَلَا يَزَالُ الْأَمْرُ يَتَطَوَّرُ عَلَىَّ حَتَّى تَقَشَّعَ الْغَمَامُ وَتَمَزَّقَتِ الْمَشِيمَةُ

    فَٱتَّخَذَ وَاحِدٌ مِنَ ٱلْحِيتَانِ سَبِيلَهُۥ فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ سَرَبًا وَقَالَ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِ وَهٰذَا ٱلْجَبَلُ طُورُسِينَا وَٱلصَّخْرَةُ صَوْمَعَةُ أَبِيكَ فَقُلْتُ وَمَا هٰؤُلَاءِ ٱلْحِيتَانُ فَقَالُوا أَشْبَاهُكَ أَنْتُمْ مِنْ أَبٍ وَاحِدٍ وَقَدْ وَقَعَ لَهُمْ شِبْهُ وَاقِعَتِكَ فَهُمْ إِخْوَانُكَ

40. ¶ 39⋯

    فَبَكَيْتُ زَمَاناً وَشَكَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْسِ قَيْرَوَانَ فَقَالَ لِي نَعَمْ تَخَلَّصْتَ إِلَّا أَنَّكَ لَابُدَّ رَاجِعٌ اِلَى السِّجْنِ الْغَرْبِيِّ وَأَنَّ الْقَيْدَ مَا خَلَّفْتَهُ تَمَاماً فَلَمَّا سَمِعْتُ طَارَ عَقْلِي وَتَأَوَّهْتُ صَارِخاً صُرَاخَ الْمُشْرِفِ عَلَى الْهَلَاكِ فَتَضَرَّعْتُ إِلَيْهِ
42. ¶ 41⋯

    فَقَالَ أَمَّا الْعَوْدُ لَكَ فَضَرُورِيٌّ الْآنَ وَلَكِنِّي أُبَشِّرُكَ بِشَيْئَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَنَّكَ إِذَا رَجَعْتَ اِلَى الْحَبْسِ يُمْكِنُكَ الْمَجِيءُ إِلَيْنَا وَالصُّعُودُ اِلَى جَنْبَتِنَا هَيِّنٌ مَتَى شِئْتَ وَالثَّانِي أَنَّكَ مُتَخَلِّصٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِ اِلَى جَنَابِنَا تَارِكاً لِلْبِلَادِ الْغَرْبِيَّةِ بِأَسْرِهَا مُطْلَقاً

    فَفَرِحْتُ بِمَا قَالَ اعْلَمْ أَنَّ هَذَا جَبَلُ طُورِسِينَا وَفَوْقَ هَذَا جَبَلُ طُورِسِينَا مَسْكَنُ وَالِدِي وَحْدَكَ وَمَا أَنَا بِالْإِضَافَةِ إِلَيْكَ إِلَّا مِثْلُكَ بِالْإِضَافَةِ إِلَيَّ

    وَلَنَا أَجْدَادٌ آخَرُونَ حَتَّى يَنْتَهِيَ النَّسَبُ الْعَظِيمُ اِلَى الَّذِي هَذَا الْجَدُّ الْأَعْظَمُ الَّذِي لَا جَدَّ لَهُ وَلَا أُمَّ وَكُلُّنَا عَبِيدُهُ وَبِهِ نَسْتَعِينُ وَمِنْهُ نَقْتَبِسُ وَلَهُ الْبَهَاءُ الْأَعْظَمُ وَالْجَلَالُ الْأَرْفَعُ وَهُوَ فَوْقَ الْفَوْقِ وَنُورُ النُّورِ وَهُوَ الْمُتَجَلِّي لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ هَالِكٌ إِلَّا وَجْهَهُۥ
