Let your knowledge that He (glory be to Him) is the One who tries you lighten for you the pain of affliction. For the One from whom the decrees come to meet you is the very One who has accustomed you to His fair choosing.

Ibn ʿAbbād

When the servant knows that God Most High is merciful toward him, tenderly inclined toward him, and watching over him in every kind of affliction and calamity that He brings upon him, he ought not to be troubled by it or give it any heed. For he has grown accustomed to nothing from Him but what is good for him; so let him think well of Him (*ḥusn al-ẓann*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
