He has forbidden you to lay claim to what is not yours among the things that belong to created beings; would He then permit you to lay claim to His attribute, when He is the Lord of the worlds?

Ibn ʿAbbād

He sets this down as a kind of proof (*dalīl*) for what he mentioned just before: that the servant (*ʿabd*) has no share (*ḥaẓẓ*) in the attributes (*ṣifāt*) of his Master (*mawlā*) except attachment (*taʿalluq*) to them, and nothing more; and that claiming any of them is among the major sins (*kabāʾir*) of the heart (*maʿāṣī al-qalb*), and a form of the one who is lorded over (*marbūb*) making himself a partner (*mushāraka*) with the Lord (*rabb*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
