Were it not for the beauty of His veiling, no work would be fit for acceptance.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The servant (*ʿabd*) is afflicted by his looking at himself (*naẓar ilā nafsihi*) and by his delight in his deed insofar as it is attributed (*nisba*) to him, and by his witnessing (*shuhūd*) of his own power and strength (*ḥawl wa-quwwa*) over it. From this he has no escape, except as his Lord wills. And he may cast off his veil (*ḥijāb*) and make a show (*riyāʾ*) of it, seeking people's praise for it. All of this belongs to hidden associationism (*al-shirk al-khafī*), which impairs true sincerity (*al-ikhlāṣ al-ḥaqīqī*).

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
