No one has truly kept you company except the one who keeps you company while fully knowing your faults, and that is none other than your generous Master. The best one to keep company with is the one who seeks you, not for anything that would come back to him from you.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The commentary: The companion (*ṣāḥib*) in reality (*ʿalā al-ḥaqīqa*) is the one who freely extends his beneficence (*iḥsān*) to you and lavishes his blessings (*niʿam*) upon you, and is not held back from this by what he knows of your faults, which he finds hateful in you. And that is none other than your Master

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
