The ray of inner sight makes you witness His nearness to you; the eye of inner sight makes you witness your nonexistence through His existence; and the reality of inner sight makes you witness His existence: neither your nonexistence nor your existence.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The ray of inner sight is the light of the intellect (*nūr al-ʿaql*); the eye of inner sight is the light of knowledge (*nūr al-ʿilm*); and the truth of inner sight is the light of the Real (*nūr al-Ḥaqq*). Thus the people of intellect (*al-ʿuqalāʾ*), by the light of their intellects, witnessed themselves and beheld (*shāhadū*) their Lord as near to them, that is, near through knowledge and all-encompassing comprehension (*al-iḥāṭa*). The people of knowledge (*al-ʿulamāʾ*), by the light of their knowledge, witnessed themselves as nonexistence within the existence of their Lord. And those who realize the truth (*al-muḥaqqiqūn*), by the light of the Real, beheld the Real and did not behold anything other than Him alongside Him.

English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
