Let not the delay in the term of the gift, despite your persistence in supplication, be a cause of your despair. For He has guaranteed you a response in what He chooses for you, not in what you choose for yourself, and at the time He wills, not at the time you will.

Ibn ʿAbbād

What befits the servant (*ʿabd*) is that he not choose anything over against his Master (*mawlā*), nor be firmly convinced of the soundness of any state (*ḥāl*) among the states, because he is ignorant in every respect: he may dislike a thing while it is good for him, and love a thing while it is bad for him

The opening of his commentary only; the whole of it runs over pdf 12–13 (printed p. 8) of the print: follow the link to the page images.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
