He has cut off those journeying to Him and those who have arrived at Him from seeing their works and witnessing their states. As for the journeyers, it is because they have not yet made sincerity with God in them a realized truth; as for those who have arrived, it is because He has made them absent from them through witnessing Him.

Ibn ʿAbbād

God has indeed lavished His grace upon both groups in doing this with them, for He kept them with Himself and did not leave them to what is other than Him. With those who have arrived, He did this willingly on their part; with the wayfarers (*al-sālikūn*), He did this against their will.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
