There are folk whom the Real has set up for His service, and folk whom He has singled out for His love. "Each do We supply, these and those, from the bestowal of your Lord; and the bestowal of your Lord is not withheld" (Qur'an 17:20).

Ibn ʿAbbād

The Real, exalted is He, possesses complete freedom of choice (*ikhtiyār*) and a will (*mashīʾa*) that is always carried out. "He is not questioned about what He does, but they are questioned" [Q 21:23]. So there is one group whom the Real, exalted is He, has established in His service until they became fit for His Garden; these are the renunciants (*zāhidūn*) and the worshippers (*ʿābidūn*), as was mentioned earlier. And there is another group whom He has singled out for His love until they became fit for His nearness (*qurb*) and for entry into His Presence (*ḥaḍra*); these are the gnostics (*ʿārifūn*) and the knowers (*ʿulamāʾ*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
