And I have from it an intoxication that was before my coming-to-be; it remains with me forever, even though the bone should decay.

al-Būrīnī

The nashwa (elation) of intoxication is its liveliness that arises at the beginnings of drinking, until the drinker enters the first stages of absence (ghayba). Al-nashʾa, with hamza, is from nashaʾa al-ṭifl, [said] when the child begins the first stages of youth, rising above the stage of childhood and entering the beginnings of youth. So he, God be pleased with him, says: the elation of my intoxication and the lightness of my delight were with me before my growing up, in the beginnings of my life. The pronoun in minhā is for the wine, maʿī is connected to tabqā, and abadan likewise.

al-Būrīnī

The wāw is for conjunction (ʿaṭf) with an implied [clause], i.e. “if the bone does not decay, and if it decays”; or it is [the wāw] of the ḥāl (circumstantial clause), or of parenthesis (iʿtirāḍ), according to what the people of maʿānī (rhetoric) say, as we have established in this commentary of ours more than once. The in here is waṣliyya (concessive “even if”) and needs no apodosis (jawāb), because it has come purely for emphasis, for strengthening the speech, and for renewal. Baliya is on the pattern of fariḥa, from al-bilā, with kasra on the bāʾ and the short [final alif], which is the opposite of newness. This verse is famous and mentioned among the beauties [of poetry]. It contains an original meaning, namely that the intoxication of this wine came to him from the beginnings of his life, and it never ceases to remain within his inmost secret (sirr), even if death comes and the bones decay; so it is from the cradle to the grave. In the verse there is al-jinās al-lāḥiq (paronomasia with differing letters) in nashwa and nashʾa, and ṭibāq (antithesis) between remaining and decay.

An allusion to the fact that, if the structure of this body, which is the bone, decays and no trace of it remains, that intoxication does not cease; rather, it lasts after the body has been annihilated.
