Never, on any day, have it and care dwelt together in one place, just as grief has never dwelt alongside melody.

It is in the accusative as a mafʿūl maʿahu (object of accompaniment), the wāw being of accompaniment. It is also permissible, though weak, [to read] wa-l-hammu in the nominative, as conjoined to the concealed pronoun, i.e. [in] sakanat, without a separating element. Al-Mutanabbī used the like of it, where he said: “They keep apart a friend though they and his union meet together, / so how then a friend when they and his aversion meet together?” The evidence is in waṣduhu in the nominative, as conjoined to the nūn in yajtamiʿna; and the rhyme letter (rawī) is in the nominative. The beginning of the ode is: “I want from the days what they do not want, / and I complain to them of our separation, while they are its troops. / They keep apart a friend though they and his union meet together, / so how then a friend when they and his aversion meet together?”

with kasra on the nūn and fatḥa on the undotted ʿayn, as the plural of niʿma, which can mean the act of bestowing and the thing bestowed. On this reading the meaning is: likewise, i.e. just as the wine has never dwelt with care in an abode on any day, so blessings do not dwell with grief in one place. In my view this reading is a distortion; rather, the correct [reading] is “kadhālika lam yaskun maʿa l-nagham al-ghamm”, with fatḥa on the doubled nūn followed by the dotted ghayn, as the plural of naghma, as came in the verse before it. That is because the verse before it contains the command to partake of it in its tavern to the melodies of its tunes, and this verse is the justification for it. So if the reading is maʿa l-nagham, with fatḥa on the nūn and the dotted ghayn, the justification is of two things by two things by way of al-laff wa-l-nashr al-murattab (ordered involution and evolution); that is,
