The Deputy of the Agent (the Subject of a Passive Verb)

النَّائِبُ عَنِ الْفَاعِلِ

Verses 242–254 · chapter 18 of 78

When the agent is omitted, another element of the clause stands in for it, takes the nominative, and receives the agent's other rules. The chapter gives the vowel changes that make a verb passive in the past and the imperfect, including verbs with tā' of compliance, verbs with connective hamza, hollow verbs, and doubled verbs. It then says which elements may serve as deputy: the direct object first, then an adverb, a verbal noun, or a prepositional phrase, and which object of a doubly transitive verb may do so. All remaining complements stay in the accusative.

The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. All agree that the second object of verbs of the kasā type [whose two objects are not originally subject and predicate] may stand in, where there is no risk of confusion: kusiya zaydan jubbatun 'Zayd was clothed with a gown'. [Where confusion is possible, as in u'ṭiya 'amrun zaydan, only the first may stand in.]

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verse 252Arabic

إذا بني الفعل المتعدي إلى مفعولين لما لم يسم فاعله فإما أن يكون من باب أعطى أو من باب ظن

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 2998 · vol. 2, p. 123 ↗

For the verbs of the ẓanna and arā classes, the well-known view forbids any object except the first from standing in. I [Ibn Mālik] see no reason to forbid it when the intended meaning is clear, e.g. ẓunna zaydan qā'imun.

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verse 253Arabic

Every complement of the verb [the governor that puts the deputy in the nominative] other than the deputy keeps the accusative, as in u'ṭiya zaydun dirhaman 'Zayd was given a dirham'.
