Annexation (the genitive construct)
الْإِضَافَةُ
Verses 385–419 · chapter 30 of 78
The chapter defines annexation (iḍāfa): the first noun drops its tanwīn or its dual or plural nūn, and the second noun takes the genitive with an understood sense of min, fī or li-. It separates semantic annexation, which makes the first noun specific or definite, from formal annexation of verb-like adjectives, which leaves them indefinite, and it gives the rules for al- in that type. It then treats nouns that are always annexed (to nouns, pronouns or sentences), the special words kilā, kiltā, ayy, ladun, maʿa, ghayr, qabl and baʿd, deletion of either member of the construct, and separation between its two members. Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 397–398Arabic
من اللازم للإضافة لفظا مالا يضاف إلا إلى المضمر وهو المراد هنا نحو وحدك أي منفردا ولبيك أي إقامة على إجابتك بعد إقامة ودواليك أي إدالة بعد إدالة وسعد يك أي إسعادا بعد إسعاد وشذ إضافة لبى إلى ضمير الغيبة ومنه قوله
Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 4429 · vol.

Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 401–402Arabic
تقدم أن الأسماء المضافة إلى الجملة على قسمين أحدهما ما يضاف إلى الجملة لزوما والثاني ما يضاف إليها جوازا
Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 4480 · vol.

It has six feet: mustafʿilun, six times. Kitāb al-ʿArūḍ, lines 842–843 (p. 101) ↗
Scanned by rule, not by a model. The vowelled text is read as it is pronounced, as Ibn Jinnī says scansion must be: doubled letters count twice, tanwīn adds an n, long vowels lengthen, the connecting alif drops inside the line, the article's l merges into a sun letter, and the last vowel of a line is drawn out. The syllables, long (–) and short (∪), are then fitted to each metre's feet with the common licences (zihāfāt) and line-endings. A poem has one metre: the one that fits most of its verses. A verse that does not fit it is marked 'not scanned'; nothing is guessed. Vowels scanned: AI vowelling (no vowelled edition is available to us).

The second noun may be deleted, and the first then stays as it was when the second was attached to it [without tanwīn],

on condition that something is conjoined to it and is annexed to the same noun to which you annexed the first [bayna dhirāʿay wa-jabhati l-asadi = bayna dhirāʿayi l-asadi wa-jabhatihi].
Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 416–417Arabic
يحذف المضاف إليه ويبقى المضاف كحاله لو كان مضافا فيحذف تنوينه
Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 4627 · vol.

Metre: not scanned
As vowelled here, this verse does not fit al-rajaz, the metre of the poem; it is left unscanned rather than forced.

Allow an annexed word that resembles a verb [a verbal noun or participle] to be separated [from its genitive] by what it governs in the accusative as object or adverbial. This is not faulted [Ibn ʿĀmir's reading qatlu awlādahum shurakāʾihim, Q 6:137].

Also allow separation by an oath [hādhā ghulāmu wa-llāhi Zaydin]. Under metrical necessity, separation is found by an unrelated element, by an adjective, or by a vocative.
Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 418–419Arabic
أجاز المصنف أن يفصل في الاختيار بين المضاف الذي هو شبه الفعل والمراد به المصدر واسم الفاعل والمضاف إليه بما نصبه المضاف من مفعول به أو ظرف أو شبهه
Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 4652 · vol. 3, p. 81 ↗
