"And if You forgive them" [Q 5:118], that is, [if] You veil them from the infliction of the chastisement that they deserve because of their opposition; that is, [if] You make for them a covering (ghafr) that veils them from that and holds it back from them, "then You, You are the Mighty" [Q 5:118], that is, the One whose protected precinct is unassailable. When the Real gives this Name to whomever He gives it among His servants, the Real is named 'the Bestower of Might' (al-Muʿizz), and the one to whom this Name is given [is named] 'the Mighty' (al-ʿAzīz). So he becomes unassailable in his protected precinct against the vengeance and chastisement that the Avenger and the Chastiser intend for him. He also brought the separating [pronoun], the 'support' (al-faṣl wa-l-ʿimād), as an emphasis for the clarification, and so that the verse would follow a single course with his saying "Surely You, You are the Knower of the unseen things" [Q 5:116] and his saying "You were the Watcher over them" [Q 5:117]. So there also came "then surely You, You are the Mighty, the Wise" [Q 5:118].

al-Jandī

for separation (faṣl) and support (ʿimād) as well, as confirmation for clarity (tawkīdan li-l-bayān), so that the verse would follow one pattern, as in His saying: "Indeed You are the Knower of the unseen," and His saying: "You were the Watcher over them." So likewise He brought: "then indeed You are the Mighty, the Wise." This was a question from the Prophet — peace be upon him — and an insistence (ilḥāḥ) from him upon his Lord in the petition throughout his whole night until the break of dawn, repeating it, seeking the answer. For had he heard the answer at the first of his asking, he would not have repeated it. And the Real was presenting to him, in detailed fashion, the particulars (fuṣūl) of what made them deserving of punishment, saying to him at each presentation and each instance: "If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are indeed the Mighty, the Wise." Had he seen in that presentation anything requiring the precedence of the Real and the preference of His presence, it would have been a prayer against them, not for them. But nothing was presented to him except what they deserved, by virtue of what this verse gives of submission to God] — meaning: of what this verse gives of entrusting their affair to Him, exalted is He. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

Jāmī

— that is, the Impregnable, the Protector (al-ʿazīz: al-manīʿ al-ḥamiyy)] The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

Bālī Zāde

meaning: Your Essence, in respect of the names 'the Mighty' and 'the Forgiving,' requires a locus of manifestation through which it appears with the perfection of manifestation, and there is no more perfect locus of manifestation than one who makes for You a partner. For if You do not shield them from torment, this wisdom which is intended to occur would be missed — namely, the manifestation of the Real with the perfection of forgivingness. So the manifestation of the Real with the perfection of forgivingness must occur, and the answering of the Messenger's supplication, peace be upon him, concerning them must occur, by God's leave. So the Real must shield from them the infliction of the torment which they deserve for this crime of theirs, in respect of the polytheists who deserved pardon and forgiveness in the eternal knowledge, on condition of the Messenger's supplication, peace be upon him, for his entire night — their final end, at the last breath of their souls, being upon faith. As for those who died clinging to polytheism, God will never forgive them, and the Messenger, peace be upon him, is not permitted to supplicate for them; rather he supplicates against them, due to the necessity of their being tormented by explicit text (naṣṣ). Nor is it permissible for the Prophet to persist with his Lord in the matter for a whole night seeking forgiveness for one for whom torment has become obligatory by explicit text, for such supplication would be of no avail, and the prophets are protected from engaging in futile action. Al-Qāḍī al-Bayḍāwī said in his commentary on the verse: the non-forgiveness of polytheism is the requirement of the threatened warning (waʿīd), so there is no impossibility in it intrinsically, such that the division [of possibilities] would be impossible — end of his words. In that case, what is meant by the division is not the seeking of forgiveness for them, but rather praise of God by the Prophet, peace be upon him, for the perfection of Unity and the perfection of Power. But the prophets are prevented by explicit divine text from seeking forgiveness for polytheists, so the division would be a special act of worship for the Messenger, beneficial to him, not to them. This, though it has a certain validity, yet the apparent sense of the verse and the circumstantial indication — namely the Prophet's recitation, peace be upon him, for an entire night — indicate what the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: that it was a supplication for them by the Prophet, peace be upon him, by God's leave. For the supplication was only for seeking an answer, and God answered his supplication. Had He not answered, He would have rebuffed it once, twice, or three times, as He Most High said: "Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive [them]" [al-Tawba: 80]. So He prevented His Prophet, peace be upon him, from seeking forgiveness for the polytheists, just as He Most High said: "You shall never see Me," O Moses. For it is God's way to prevent His Prophet, peace be upon him, from doing what is of no benefit; and had this division concerning them been of no benefit, his Prophet, peace be upon him, would not have persisted in it for an entire night. He did not cease the division except at the break of dawn, and had it needed to be longer, it would have been longer. So the apparent sense of the verse indicates the perfection of the Prophet's compassion and mercy toward them, peace be upon him; so this is nothing but a supplication and intercession for them, not a mere division devoid of a plea for forgiveness. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

is called ("'the mighty' [al-ʿazīz]"), because he is a locus of manifestation for the Real's self-disclosure (tajallī) with might. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: ("so") the Real ("becomes")

Jāmī

Bālī Zāde

that is, one who prevents what He protects, and none is protected by Him except the very essence of His servant.

Bālī Zāde

so the requirement of this name is to prevent torment from the sinning servant; therefore he took refuge in his supplication to Him, and God answered his supplication, preserving him from wasting his striving through an entire night. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

Ibn Turka

following the same course of comprising the duality which is the root of the matter of multiplicity and its completion, as has been explained in its place and indicated therein. This is why the Messenger of God, may God's blessings and peace be upon him, repeated this supplication (duʿāʾ) for an entire night, and from this you see the Seal repeating it upon receiving the response, manifesting it in the form of multiplicity which is the requirement of its matter.
