So it was a request from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and an insistence on his part with his Lord in the asking, throughout his whole night until the break of dawn, repeating it in quest of the answer. Had he heard the answer at the first request, he would not have repeated [it]. And the Real was presenting to him the particulars of that by which they had made themselves liable to chastisement, a detailed presentation, and he would say to Him at each presentation and each entity, entity by entity: "If You chastise them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise" [Q 5:118]. Had he seen in that presentation something that required giving precedence to the Real and preferring His side, he would have prayed against them, not for them. So He presented to him only that by which they deserved what this verse grants: submission to God and exposure to His pardon.

places and does not deviate with them from what their realities, with their attributes, require and demand. So the Wise is the One who knows the [proper] ordering (al-tartīb). Thus he — peace and blessings be upon him — in repeating this verse, possessed tremendous knowledge from God. "So whoever recites, let him recite thus"] — meaning: let him recite [it this way] — "otherwise, silence is more fitting for him. And when God grants a servant success (tawfīq) in uttering some matter, what He has granted him success in" — meaning "toward it" (ʿalayhi), for prepositions (ḥurūf al-jarr) are sometimes interchanged, especially "ilā" (to/toward) and "ʿalā" (upon/toward), as God — exalted is He — said: "sent down to you" (unzila ilayka) and "sent down upon you" (anzala ʿalayka) in [various] places. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

. For had the Prophet, peace be upon him, seen in that presentation anything necessitating the priority of the Real and the preference of His sacred precinct] over His willing to overpower them and take vengeance on them—for the willing of overpowering and vengeance is among what necessitates preferring the sacred precinct of the Real, since the servant has no share in it, unlike gentleness and mercy, in which the servant does have a share; so these two are not, then, sought purely for God's sake, even though it is possible that His side, exalted is He, also be considered in them, when the two concur with His will.

— those in need of You, abased before You in the ultimate abasement; they are the ones deserving, who ask, by the tongue of receptivity (qābiliyya), for Your chastisement — and here is an indication pointing to a clear correspondence between "servants" (ʿibād) and "chastisement" (ʿadhāb).

Bālī Zāde

Ibn Turka

without distinguishing any particular entity or singling it out for the supplication; except that he specified the first group by their relation (nisba) to Him, Exalted, making that relation a means for the verification of their affair, and the second group by the forgiveness that conceals them from the manifestation of that relation. And for that reason he arranged, consequent upon it, the form of restriction and unification; so it is the supplication for both groups according to what their natural disposition (jibla) requires. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

Jāmī

— so his saying "what it conveys" is the object of "deserving" (istiḥqāq). If you should say: the thing presented to him, peace be upon him, is only the servants' sins, which is what they deserved chastisement for, as was stated explicitly at first — why, then, is it judged here that they deserved by it submission to God

Ibn Turka

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

— thus the "mā" in "mā yuʿṭīhi" (that which He gives him) stands in place of that for which they deserved it, and in this is an indication that the arrival of the people of chastisement and of forgiveness at what they deserved is only through the supplication of the Seal, according to what the principles require. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

for that would contradict their deserving punishment through them. I say: the sins necessitating punishment pertain only to their essences, and matters may attach to them that remove them from this, such as repentance and remorse, or matters may precede them, such as the special care (al-ʿināya) from the side of the Real, glory be to Him. So nothing was presented to him except their sins, for which, looking at their essences, they deserved punishment; but that presentation occurred in a manner conveying - the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: (It has been related that when the Real loves the voice of His servant in his supplication to Him, He delays the response to him so that this may be repeated by him, out of love for him, not out of turning away from him; and for this reason He came with the Name 'the Wise' (al-Ḥakīm), and the Wise is the One who places things in their proper places and does not deviate with them from what their realities, together with their attributes, require and demand. And when God grants a servant success in uttering some matter, God only grants him success in it because He has already willed to answer him in it and fulfill his need; so let no one deem slow what is contained in what he has been granted success in, and let him persevere as the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, persevered) in their deserving what the verse grants of submission to God and allusion to His pardon. Then he, may God be pleased with him, wished to clarify that the delay of the response by means of the presentation of the particulars is only among the requirements of His special care, not a turning away from him, so he said
