Know that the gifts and bestowals that are manifest in [engendered] being, at the hands of [God's] servants and not at their hands, are of two kinds. Among them are those that are gifts of the Essence and gifts of the Names, and these are distinguished [from one another] by the folk of tastings; just as among them are those that come from an asking for something specified and from an asking for nothing specified; and among them are those that do not come from any asking, whether the gift be of the Essence or of the Names. The specified [asking] is like one who says, 'My Lord, give me such-and-such,' and so specifies some particular matter, nothing other than which occurs to him. The unspecified [asking] is like one who says, 'My Lord, give me that in which You know there is my welfare,' without specifying [anything], for every part of my self, subtle and dense.

because whatever has no intermediary or intermediaries between it and the Essence is an essential gift, while whatever has an intermediary or intermediaries between it and the Essence is a gift related to the Names. Tasting (dhawq) judges the distinction and perceives the Name-related gift within the essential gifts, while reason (ʿaql) conceives the essential gift within the Name-related gifts. His words "the specified one" (al-muʿayyan) with the yāʾ vowelled as kasra means the one who makes the specified request, as in "one who says"; or with fatḥa it means the specified request, as in the request of one who says such-and-such, understood implicitly. Having divided the gifts into essential and Name-related, and having referred their distinction to tasting, he then divided them by another consideration into categories perceptible by the senses, likening the aforementioned division in its distinguishing of categories to this sensory division—not as a further division in itself. That is, the two aforementioned categories are distinguished by tasting just as these [other] categories are distinguished by reason—indeed by the senses. His discourse is clear up to his saying

I say: al-nafth is blowing, so it is as if he says: "The Spirit of Holiness blew into my innermost being." By "the Word" is meant Seth, upon him peace; he attributed the Word to him by way of attributing the named thing to its name, according to the view of one who intends by the name to indicate the named thing. Al-minaḥ are the gifts (al-ʿaṭāyā), and it is permissible to conjoin a thing with itself when the wordings differ. An example of the gifts that occur at the hands of servants is what people bestow upon one another. An example of what occurs not at their hands is what God Most High bestows upon His servants of gnosis, knowledge, or other than that, without intermediary or through the intermediary of an angel among the angels. An example of the essential gifts is that God Most High discloses Himself to one of His saints, so that there occurs for him the essential witnessing (al-shuhūd al-dhātī) which is above the levels of the names, attributes, and acts. An example of the gifts pertaining to the names is that there occurs for the saint a witnessing from the presence of one of the divine names, such as al-Qayyūm, for instance, so that he witnesses the self-subsistence (qayyūmiyya) of the Real Most High, by which everything subsists; and were it not for the world's subsistence through the divine self-subsistence, it would perish all at once, and were it not for the qayyūmiyya, it would not exist at all. Know that the attributes and acts revert to the divine names. He said: these gifts and bestowals are distinguished by the people of tasting, so they know the essential gifts from the gifts pertaining to the names, and they also distinguish the gifts of some names from others, and this is known only to the people of tasting. Tasting (al-dhawq) is an expression for a gnostic light which the Real Most High casts by His self-disclosure into the hearts of His saints, by which they distinguish between the true and the false, without transmitting that from any book or otherwise. The rest of the discourse is evident. And his saying, may God be pleased with him]

The servant said: the divine grants and gifts, whether their arrival to the servants occurs at the hands of servants as intermediaries or without intermediary, are either essential — I mean [pertaining to] the essences of divinity — which are specific self-disclosures (tajalliyāt) from God, [being] the oneness of the totality (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ) of all the divine Names, specific to the perfect ones who are brought near, and to the rare among the perfect individuals — since the Essence as such neither gives a gift nor discloses itself, neither an essential nor a nominal [disclosure], except in terms of a particular Presence, according to the reception of the one to whom the self-disclosure occurs and the specificity of his receptivity and station. These gifts, self-disclosures, tastings, forms of knowledge, states, and character traits are distinguished among those who possess them, who know them through taste (dhawq) and unveiling (kashf). He said, may God be pleased with him:

The specified is like one who says, 'O Lord, give me such-and-such,' thereby specifying some particular matter, with nothing else occurring to him; and the unspecified is like one who says, 'Give me what You know to be my welfare,' without specifying any part of my essence. [Jāmī's Commentary:] The manifest, absolutely, and by way of its mediation. tastes] i.e., it divides into two kinds: essential gifts and gifts pertaining to the Names. What is meant by the essential gifts is that whose principle is the Essence, without regard for any attribute among the attributes accompanying it, even though this does not occur except by the mediation of the Names and Attributes, since the Real does not disclose Himself in respect of His Essence to existent things except from behind a veil among the veils of the Names. And by "pertaining to the Names" is meant that whose principle is an attribute among the attributes, in respect of its determination (taʿayyun) and distinction from the Essence. The former has ranks: the first of them is the Most Holy Effusion (al-fayḍ al-aqdas), which flows from His Essence upon His Essence, from which the entities and their preparednesses (istiʿdādāt) come about; the second is what flows upon the universal external natures from those entities; and the third is what flows from them upon their existent individuals according to their ranks. These essential gifts never cease being a single description, as in His saying, the Exalted: "And Our command is but one, like the twinkling of an eye." But in accordance with the Names and Attributes and their loci of manifestation, which are the receptacles, it becomes manifold and multiple. The gifts pertaining to the Names are otherwise, since what issues from the Name "the Merciful" (al-Raḥīm) is contrary to what issues from "the Avenger" (al-Muntaqim), each of the two being restricted to a specific rank. And the source of the essential gifts, in respect of the Names, is the Name "Allah," "the All-Merciful" (al-Raḥmān), "the Lord" (al-Rabb), and other Names of the Essence — their explanation has already preceded in the chapter on the Names. The people of unveiling and witnessing distinguish between the two [kinds] at the occurrence of the effusion and the self-disclosure, and each knows the source of its outpouring by his own particular criterion (mīzān) derived from his unveiling. And what is meant by "the people of [spiritual] taste" (dhawq) is one for whom the ruling of these self-disclosures descends from the station of his spirit and heart to the station of his soul (nafs) and its faculties, as though he finds that as a sensation, perceiving it as a taste — indeed, it appears upon their faces. He, the Exalted, said: "You will recognize in their faces the radiance of bliss." This is the station of the perfected ones and the solitary ones (al-afrād), and the Real discloses Himself by the essential Names only to them

necessarily, since those possessed of intellects and masters of speculative reflection only seek their objects from the prepared causes, and travel the paths of syllogisms that lead to them. They are thus veiled from the essential gifts and the sanctified bestowals that transcend recourse to intermediaries. Moreover, their doctrine of causality (ʿilliyya) precludes their seeing what comes at the hands of servants as being among the essential gifts, which is one of the aforementioned divisions. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

when the gifts reach him. Herein is an indication that the difference between the two is subtle and fine, such that it is only distinguished by the people of tasting. Having explained the gifts from the side of the Giver, he proceeds to explain their occasioning cause from the side of the one given to, namely the asking (suʾāl), since the gifts are realized through both together. He likened the division of gifts into essential and pertaining-to-the-Names, from the side of the Agent, to their division into two kinds from the side of the receptacle: one is that which occurs upon a request, i.e., upon the servant's asking, either for something specific, like asking for knowledge and certainty, or for something unspecified, as when one says: "O God, grant me what is beneficial for me, for You know my state and what is good for me" better than I. that is, without detailing what he summarized in his saying "give me what You know contains benefit for me." For "what You know" is a summary statement that could include the subtle (al-laṭīf), i.e., the spiritual, such as knowledge and wisdom, or the dense (al-kathīf), i.e., the corporeal, such as wealth and offspring, or both together—nothing specific occurring to his mind. In some manuscripts it reads: "for every part, of what is mine essentially, subtle and dense," with "of" being explicative (bayāniyya), and by "essential" (dhātī) is meant whatever actually realizes the reality and essence of what is sought; for "what You know contains benefit for me" is a contingent matter attaching to every sought gift

sciences and gnoses, and the deeds that purify the heart, illumine the spirit, and guide toward it. (and the dense) such as objects of appetite and pleasure, and other foods and acts that cloud the heart, darken the spirit, and cast a shadow over its direction; so he specifies none of that in his supplication. As it was said: 'I have entrusted my whole affair to the Beloved... whether He wills to give me life or wills to let me perish.' This is the station of those who have arrived at the totality of love and the banner of loyal devotion, as it was said: 'Between the shadow of the bent one and his shade... the love-smitten one went astray and was guided by his very straying.' All these divisions are with respect to the one who bestows and the one requested of; and with respect to the requesters themselves there is another division, to which he alluded by his statement: (And the requesters) are also

And having finished with these divisions, he alluded to another division with regard to the petitioners, saying: (and the petitioners) by speech - those who are not among the people of presence (ḥuḍūr) and the watching of the moments (murāqabat al-awqāt); we have so qualified it lest it apply to one who petitions solely in compliance with the command, as will come [later]. spiritual (and gross) corporeal, as he said, 'the world is composed of the subtle and the gross,' i.e., composed of both, like the example mentioned; or he may mention them but not in a determinate manner, rather in a universal manner encompassing all parts of his essence, both subtle and gross — like one who says, 'give me, for every essential part of mine, of the subtle and the gross,' by annexing 'part' to 'essence' annexed to the yāʾ of the speaker, or by adding 'min' (of/from). On this reckoning, the bāʾ pertains to the speaker as the one to whom it is annexed. The author did not mention this category explicitly but subsumed it under his saying 'give me what contains my benefit,' making it comprehensive of this category, since each of the two is indeterminate. He alluded to it again in his saying 'without specifying, for every essential part, the subtle and the gross' — otherwise it would be fitting to say, after 'give me what contains my benefit,' 'so he does not specify any particular matter,' just as he said after 'give me such-and-such,' 'so he specifies some particular matter' — 'without specification' being connected to 'he says.' Thus the indeterminate request is completed by his saying 'i.e., give me what contains my benefit,' just as the determinate one is completed by his saying 'give me such-and-such.' In that case it would not be fitting for 'for every essential part' to be connected to 'give me,' but rather to 'without specification.' So his saying 'my essential' — with tashdīd on the yāʾ — is a descriptor of 'every part,' whether with the addition of 'min' as occurs in some copies, or without it. As for the example we have given, it is as we have said: his saying 'without specifying, for every essential part, the subtle and the gross' is not part of the completion of the request but an explanation of the indeterminate, which is the example mentioned — just as his saying 'he specifies some particular matter, and nothing else occurs to him' is an explanation of the determinate. Having finished explaining the request, he proceeds to explain the ranks of petitioners, saying: (And the petitioners) by verbal utterance (of question)
