This knowledge was the knowledge of Seth, upon him be peace. His spirit is the one that supplies every spirit that speaks about the like of this, except the spirit of the Seal. For the supply comes to [the Seal] only from God, not from any spirit among the spirits. Rather, from his spirit the supply comes to be for all the spirits. Even if he does not grasp this of himself during the time of the composition of his elemental body, he nevertheless knows all of it, by his very self, with respect to his reality and his rank. [He knows it] in the very respect in which he is ignorant of it on the side of his elemental composition.

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

Its meaning is: even though the Seal — the one who supplies all spirits, between whom and God there is no intermediary — does not comprehend, at the time of his manifestation in elemental corporeal form, of his own self, that it is he who supplies all human spirits with the sciences and wisdom proper to them and effuses from himself upon them — because the natural hylic veil, of the coverings and dark corporealities necessarily attached to his form, prevents him [from this awareness]. For this reason the Sufis said that the basis of the forty-day retreat (al-arbaʿīniyya) by which they discipline themselves derives from the forty mentioned in His saying: 'I leavened the clay of Adam with My two hands for forty mornings' — for the leavening is the leavening of the matter of his body and its tempering, until, by its equilibrium, it became proportionate to the human species of his spirit. So he [the spirit] becomes manifest in it and is veiled by it — a manifestation and a veiling which the philosophers termed 'the governing attachment' (al-taʿalluq al-tadbīrī). For when those natural dispositions and bodily coverings are lifted from his face through spiritual discipline and sincere orientation toward God, Exalted, those sciences and wisdoms become manifest upon him — as he, upon him blessing and peace, said: 'Whoever is sincere to God for forty mornings, springs of wisdom well up from his heart upon his tongue.' But this does not persist except at a certain moment, which is the moment concerning which he, upon him blessing and peace, said: 'I have with God a moment which no angel brought near nor any sent prophet can contain.' That is the moment in which his entity (ʿayn) is unveiled to him regarding what is within it.

al-Qayṣarī

That is, the knowledge of the Divine Names upon which the bestowals (aʿṭiyāt) depend was specific to Sheth, upon him be peace, among the children of Adam from the prophets and saints, except for the Seal of the Saints (khātam al-awliyāʾ), for he takes from God all of what he manifests of perfections, as [the Shaykh] will mention. Therefore he—may God be pleased with him—singled out the bestowals in his wisdom and rank. So everyone who speaks about this knowledge draws from his spirit, because every entity (ʿayn) is specific to a particular rank by which it is distinguished from others; its locus of manifestation (maẓhar) takes from it by its very self, while others take from it according to the measure of correspondence (munāsaba) between them and that locus of manifestation, just as every Name is specific to a particular attribute by which it is distinguished from others. And he only said 'and his spirit is that which supplies' because everyone who speaks about this knowledge takes that meaning by his spirit from the spirit of the Seal—indeed, even this prophet, from the standpoint of his sainthood (walāya), takes what he takes from God by means of his rank, as was explained before, namely that he is the possessor of the rank of absolute sainthood (al-walāya al-muṭlaqa), so he has the supplying and giving of the meaning taken. And it does not follow, from his spirit being a supplier to everyone who speaks about this knowledge, that he does not himself draw by his spirit from the spirit of the Seal.

Ibn Turka

i.e., the knowledge of the all-encompassing amplitude that contains what has no end, neither in number nor in limit; for it was established at the opening of the Faṣṣ that he was the first child born from the Greatest Father, so he is the one who gathers together all the children born after him. This is indicated by what his very name comprises, in both meaning and numerical value, of the nine which is the furthest extent of the breadth of multiplicity and the utmost of its degrees. This is the reason for the precedence of his Word and the placing of his Wisdom first, for it is the one that discloses the totality of what the [other] Words comprise of wisdoms.

because of the accumulation of the dense veils of hylic coverings at that time, and the domination therein of the governing overseer of the corporeal faculties over him, as was established by the author of al-Maḥbūb, peace of God be upon him, in his book. And because, by virtue of that comprehensive subtle reality proper to him which holds both extremes, and that all-encompassing binding relation which contains the two opposites, he draws near to the Absolute Ipseity and receives effusion from it without intermediary — for even though, from this [bodily] aspect, he is ignorant of that loftiness

that is, even though the composition of his elemental body veils him from intellectually grasping what we have said, yet from the standpoint of his rank and reality he knows that. As he, upon him be peace, said: 'You are more knowledgeable in the affairs of your worldly life,' even though it is his reality that supplies them with the knowledge of it—this being due to the dominance of human nature (bashariyya) at certain times over what his reality gives. And he only qualified the body as 'elemental' because the imaginal-spiritual body does not prevent him from intellectually grasping what his rank gives. And know that the Perfect Human (al-insān al-kāmil), even though from the standpoint of his reality he is knowing of all the Divine forms of knowledge and sciences, this does not become manifest except after manifestation in concrete existence (al-wujūd al-ʿaynī) and attachment to the elemental composition (al-mizāj al-ʿunṣurī), because in the sensory world the full manifestation of entities occurs; likewise the rest of their perfections, which are in them potentially, do not become manifest in actuality except after the soul is realized externally and attaches to the body. And since his elemental composition was, at first, the cause of his veiling and heedlessness—predominantly—regarding his true perfection in certain periods, such as the period of childhood up to true maturity, and since this same thing was also precisely the cause of the manifestation of his perfections and forms of knowledge, he—may God be pleased with him—said:

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

that is, from the rank of his spirit comes the supply for all the spirits. And we say this because Sheth, upon him be peace, and the perfect ones (al-kummal) and the solitary ones (al-afrād) take the meanings and wise sayings (ḥikam) from God just as the one they follow (mutbūʿuhum) takes from Him. The Shaykh—may God be pleased with him—has stated this explicitly in several places in the Futūḥāt. And since this rank belongs originally to the spirit of the Seal, while others have but a share of it, he—may God be pleased with him—said:

based on what has preceded more than once, that it is among the distinguishing features of the Sealing Reality that it embraces the extremities and encompasses all the ends and the totality of the increases, and it has been made clear that this is realized only by its comprehensiveness of the two opposites in their mutually opposing aspects, so it becomes then the confluence of opposites from both directions — that is, by consideration of the unity of the two differing loci and origins, not by consideration of the difference of the respects [taken separately], for in that case it would not be a confluence of opposites. — meaning that the Seal, in respect of his reality and his encompassing perfect rank, combines knowledge and ignorance from a single respect, in that their locus of predication is his absolute reality, in respect of its absoluteness and its not being restricted by either of the two opposites — even though the cause of the occurrence of each of the two is a separate matter, for knowledge arises from the respect of his spiritual disengagement (tajarrud), and ignorance from the respect of his elemental composition. The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
