So in "There is nothing like His likeness" [Q 42:11] there is both the affirmation of the likeness and its negation. For this reason he (God bless him and give him peace) said of himself that he had been given the all-comprehensive words. Thus Muḥammad did not summon his people "by night and by day"; rather, he summoned them by night in day and by day in night. Then Noah, in his wisdom, said to his people: "He will send the sky upon you in abundant rain" [Q 71:11], and that [sky] is the rational knowledges concerning the meanings and reflective consideration; "and He will supply you with wealth [amwāl]" [Q 71:12], that is, with that which inclines (yamīlu) you toward Him. And when it inclines you toward Him, you will see your own form in Him. So whoever among you imagines that he has seen Him has not known; and whoever among you knows that he has seen himself, he is the knower. For this reason people are divided into the non-knowing and the knowing.

"And his children"—that is, what their discursive reflection produced for them. And the matter, its knowledge is dependent upon witnessing (mushāhada), far from the results of reflection. by night and by day, but rather called them by night within day and by day within night] That is, in this verse he combined tashbīh and tanzīh, and it is like the conclusion of what had already been established. By this combination he informed [us] about himself that he was given the comprehensive words, namely the divine names and all their requisites; for he did not call [merely] to the manifest (ẓāhir) and its rulings, nor [merely] to the nonmanifest (bāṭin) and its rulings, but rather combined the nonmanifest and the manifest through the oneness of combination (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ) — nonmanifest within the manifest and manifest within the nonmanifest — that is, the whole insofar as it is one, comprised within both together. His statement (So Noah, peace be upon him, said in his wisdom to his people — "He will send the sky upon you in abundance") means that when Noah, peace be upon him, saw their actual response in accordance with their station and state — since they understood from "seeking forgiveness" (istighfār) the request for concealment (satr), and from "forgiveness" (ghufrān) concealment [itself], and construed his statement mockingly, dissembling because their state contradicted his — he descended from his station to outwit them by guile, that he might guide them from whence they were not aware. So he spoke in a manner whose outward sense suited what they had chosen of outward forms, while its inward sense suited their rational faculty (maʿqūl), which they followed and received through their thoughts and intellects — tainted with conjecture, veiled from understanding, distracted from the light of holiness by the darkness of the world of impurity. So he said —

وهو قوله: "أوتيت جوامع الكلم" يعني ما أنزل الله تعالى علي في حق نفسه أية بل نصف آية إلا وهي جامعة بين التنزيه والتشبيه . ومن جملتها قوله تعالى

This is his saying: "I was given the comprehensive words," meaning that God Most High did not reveal to me, concerning Himself, a single verse — nay, not even half a verse — except that it combined tanzīh (declaring incomparability) and tashbīh (declaring similarity). Among these is His saying, Most High:

That is, God combined for the Prophet, God bless him and grant him peace, in His words "naught is like unto Him," both the affirmation of resemblance and its negation in a single verse, indeed in half a verse. And ("by this") that is, because of this combination of tashbīh and tanzīh, as he, God bless him and grant him peace, said: "I was given the sum totals of speech," meaning all realities and forms of knowledge. For this reason the Qur'an gathered together all the meanings that had been sent down in the books of the prophets, peace be upon them. So he, God bless him and grant him peace, called his people to the manifest within the very essence of the nonmanifest, and to the nonmanifest within the very essence of the manifest. Some said: God decreed their secrets [thus]—they put their fingers (i.e., the forms of the particular, cosmic, detailed blessings, which are branches of the universal, comprehensive divine hands) in their ears (i.e., at the moment of hearing what he called them to, [coming] from those universal hands), so they were deprived of the relation (nisba) of their preparedness's (istiʿdād) engagement with those particular blessings from turning to accept these universal hands. "They covered themselves with their garments": they concealed themselves with the garments of their entifications (taʿayyunāt) and the veil of their [self-]affirmation, so the call summoning them to the comprehensive station (al-martaba al-jamʿiyya) does not reach their hearing, nor do the lights of the manifestation of His beauty in the cosmic loci of manifestation (maẓāhir) appear to their sight.

for it is characteristic of subtle matters free of hylic (hayūlānī) differences and corporeal distortions, purified from the rust of extraneous coverings and dark individuating accidents, that the observer sees his own form in them. And universal, scientific beliefs possess this subtlety in the most complete manner, so nothing appears to their possessors therein except their own form. He, may God be pleased with him, means: because the One who discloses Himself in the forms of your fixed entities discloses Himself only according to their particularities, not according to Himself without particular form. Correct knowledge of the true Lord for the servant is therefore identical with the knowledge of his own fixed entity, which is his very self. He, God be pleased with him, said: "And for this reason people are divided into the ignorant and the knowing." He, may God be pleased with him, means: whoever sees his own entity has seen the Real, and whoever thinks that he has seen the Real [as something other than his own entity] has not seen the Real nor known Him. He, God be pleased with him, said: "and his offspring" — that is, what his discursive reflection (naẓar fikrī) has produced for him, the matter's knowledge being dependent on direct witnessing, far removed from the fruits of discursive thought — "except loss." He, may God be pleased with him, means: his wealth, by which he inclined and toward which he inclined away from the Real, and his offspring which is among the fruits of his ordinary discursive knowledge, added to him nothing but loss, since it led him to separation and division and led him astray from oneness (aḥadiyya) and gathering (jamʿ) — for perfection lies in witnessing, not in disbelief and denial. He, God be pleased with him, said: "So their commerce did not profit, and what was in their hands, which they imagined to be their own possession, vanished from them." He, God be pleased with him, means: since the utmost reach of their gazes and the furthest extent of the knowledge attained by their discursive thought was deviation toward the peripheries, and inclination of wealth away from the Real and away from [proper] qualification, in accordance with injustice and transgression — while the Real subsists in the oneness of the gathering (aḥadiyyat al-jamʿ) of concord and difference — their likeness was as a mirage in a desert plain of imagination, which gleamed and then vanished, and what was in their hands, other than the Real, dissolved and departed: "And We shall turn to whatever deeds they have done and make them scattered dust." He, God be pleased with him, said: "And in the Muhammadans [it is]

(the "fa") indicates sequence. That is, after seeing his own form in the Real, whoever among you imagines that he has seen the Real has not truly known, because His Essence, from the standpoint of Its very selfhood, cannot possibly be seen. Vision only occurs upon descent (tanazzul) and self-disclosure in a form that can be seen, as he, God bless him and grant him peace, said: "You shall see your Lord as you see the moon on the night of the full moon," likening it to the seeing of the moon. And whoever among you knows that he has seen himself and his own entity (ʿayn), he is the true knower (ʿārif). The other is not a perfect knower, even though he belongs to the people of disclosure (kashf) and witnessing, as was mentioned previously in the "Chapter of Seth." (And "his child"—that which his discursive reflection produced for them; and the matter, whose knowledge is contingent upon direct witnessing, is far removed from the fruits of speculative thought, except as loss.) This is an allusion to His words, Exalted is He: "Noah said: My Lord, indeed they disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children increased him only in loss." That is: they disobeyed me and did not accept from me what necessitates witnessing and direct vision, and they followed their intellects and their discursive, speculative reflection which "increased him not"—that is, their intellectual sciences—"and his children"—that is, the results they obtained from the composition of their rational syllogisms
