- ¶ 1..،،.
Know that declaring incomparability (tanzīh), in the view of the folk of the realities, is—with respect to the divine side—the very self of delimiting and restricting. So the one who declares incomparability is either ignorant or someone of ill courtesy. But if the two of them declare it without qualification and profess it [as the whole truth], then the one who professes the revealed laws, the believer, if he declares incomparability and halts at declaring incomparability and sees nothing other than that, has behaved with ill courtesy and has given the lie to the Real and to the messengers (God's blessings be upon them) without being aware of it. He imagines that he is in [possession of] what has been attained, while he is in what has slipped away [from him].

He is like one who believes in part and disbelieves in part, especially since he knows that when the tongues of the divine revealed Laws speak concerning the Real (exalted is He) with whatever they speak, they bring it, for the generality [of people], according to the first [obvious] sense, and for the elect, according to every sense that is understood from the aspects of that expression, in whatever language it may be, according to the conventional usage of that language. For the Real has a manifestation in every created thing: so He is the Manifest in every thing understood, and He is the Nonmanifest to every understanding, except the understanding of one who says that the cosmos is His form and His He-ness (huwiyya). And that is the name 'the Manifest', just as He is, in [respect of] meaning, the spirit of what has become manifest, so He is the Nonmanifest.

So His relation to the forms of the cosmos that have become manifest is the relation of the governing spirit to the form. Thus in the definition of the human being, for example, both his nonmanifest and his manifest [dimensions] are taken [into account], and likewise with every defined thing. So the Real is defined by every definition. Yet the forms of the cosmos cannot be fixed within bounds or encompassed, nor are the definitions of each of its forms known except to the measure of the forms that each knower has obtained. In the same way, the definition of the Real remains unknown, for His definition is known only through knowing the definition of every form, and attaining that is impossible; so the definition of the Real is impossible. Likewise, whoever declares His similarity and does not declare His incomparability has delimited Him and defined Him, and has not known Him.

And whoever joins together, in his knowledge [of Him], declaring incomparability and declaring similarity, and describes Him by both descriptions in summary fashion – since that is impossible in detail, owing to the lack of encompassment of the forms that are in the cosmos – has known Him in summary, not in detail, just as he has known himself in summary, not in detail. For this reason the Prophet (God bless him and give him peace) tied knowledge of the Real to knowledge of the self, saying: "Whoever knows himself knows his Lord." And He said: "We shall show them Our signs upon the horizons" [Q 41:53] – and that is what is outside of you – "and in their own selves" [Q 41:53] – and that is your very self (ʿayn) – "until it becomes clear to them" [Q 41:53] – that is, to the one who looks – "that He is the Real" [Q 41:53], inasmuch as you are His form and He is your spirit. So you are to Him like the bodily form is to you, and He is to you like the spirit governing the form of your body.
