Highness is two relations: highness of place and highness of rank. As for highness of place: "And We raised him up to a high place" [Q 19:57]. The highest of places is the place upon which the millstone of the world of the spheres turns, namely the sphere of the sun, and in it is the station of the spirituality of Idrīs. Beneath it are seven spheres and above it are seven spheres, and it is the fifteenth. That which is above it is the sphere of the Red [planet, Mars], the sphere of Jupiter, the sphere of Kaywān [Saturn], the sphere of the [lunar] mansions, the starless (atlas) sphere, [which is] the sphere of the zodiacal constellations, the sphere of the Footstool, and the sphere of the Throne. That which is below it is the sphere of Venus, the sphere of the Scribe [Mercury], the sphere of the moon, the globe of ether, the globe of air, the globe of water, and the globe of earth. So inasmuch as it is the pole of the spheres, it is lofty in place. As for highness of rank, it belongs to us, I mean the Muhammadans.

Height of place is a thing's being in the highest of places, while height of rank is its being in the highest of degrees, even if it is not spatial, or even if it is in the lowest of places - like the height of the degree of the perfect human (al-insān al-kāmil) relative to the highest celestial sphere. Height of place was affirmed for Idrīs because he had not divested himself of spiritual determination (al-taʿayyun al-rūḥānī), nor had he attained the Muḥammadan essential unification (al-tawḥīd al-dhātī) through stripping away all attributes of otherness and effacement in the very Essence of unicity (al-dhāt al-aḥadiyya). Rather, he stripped away the natural human attributes, thereby divesting himself of the elemental configuration (al-nashʾa al-ʿunṣuriyya) and its properties, while remaining with the spiritual attributes and their modes. Thus the dark modes of his soul were exchanged for the luminous modes of his spirit, and his form was transformed into an imaginal, luminous form corresponding to his spiritual modes. He was thus raised to his original abode and the station of his original nature (fiṭra), which is the sphere of the sun - whose spirit is the source from which the descent of the spirit of the Pole (al-quṭb) originates. For the spirit of this sphere is the noblest of the celestial spirits, just as the spirit of the Pole is the noblest of human spirits. For this reason the sun is the noblest of the stars and the chief of heaven, and all the stars are bound to it as the subjects of a king are bound to him - celestial from one aspect and terrestrial from another, as is made clear in the science of astronomy (ʿilm al-hayʾa). Its sphere is the most particular and central of the spheres, like the place of the king in the middle of the kingdom, since the middle is the best of places and the most protected from corruption. So relative to the other spheres it is like the pivot of the millstone, and by its motion the affairs of the world are ordered and reckoning and times are regulated. Thus it is highest in rank and noblest in spirit among all places. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

It is as if he said: elevation is of two kinds. Or its meaning could be: elevation has two relations: elevation of place and elevation of station. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

Ibn Turka

What unites them both is the relation of nobility and loftiness of rank, which is the requirement of detachment (tajarrud) and nearness to the Source (mabdaʾ). This is because the manifest loci (maẓāhir), whenever the rulings of the manifest (ẓāhir) predominate in them, being pure of the admixtures of extraneous matters—from the particularities of the locus of manifestation itself—are nearer to the Source and loftier in relation to It. Hence you see that he made the inanimate (jamād) the highest of all things—as you shall come to see—so accordingly, the highest of places is but the Pole (quṭb), in that it is free of motions and of the occurrence of extraneous rulings upon it. This is when each sphere is considered in itself. But if the spheres are considered altogether—from the aspect of their collective arrangement and formal ordering witnessed by the possessors of insight and sight—then the highest in place is but the sphere of the Sun, because it is the mediating link of this collective order, and upon it turns the affair of manifestation. And if they are considered according to what belongs to them in themselves, from the aspect of their collective form and unitary particularization, then the highest of places among them is the Throne (ʿarsh), for it comprises what was mentioned regarding the aspect of elevation, together with its delimitation of that direction—as the masters of wisdom have explained—given that true elevation is that which is not in opposition to lowness—based on the premised principle—and this is only realized in the sphere of the Sun, not in the delimiting sphere (al-muḥaddid). Now if it be said: what has been mentioned in explaining the aspect of elevation requires that the center be the absolute highest in that respect, since nothing is more free than it from extraneous particularities and external rulings—we say: the discussion is only concerning places, and it is not one of them—whether one holds it to be a mere distance (buʿd mujarrad) or a surface (saṭḥ)—rather it is not part of this collectivity at all. For the Shaykh states explicitly in ʿUqlat al-Mustawfiz that it is the locus of the regard of the Greatest Element (al-ʿunṣur al-aʿẕam), from whose glance the Intellect was created, and that the entire affair of creation proceeds from it and returns to it; hence it is not included within it. The sphere of the Sun is at the highest of places. Now that you know that elevation in general is divided into elevation of place and elevation of station—

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. A bezel of holy wisdom in an Enochian word. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, made the Enochian word follow the Noahic word—even though Enoch preceded Noah, peace be upon them both, in terms of time—due to a specific correspondence between them, namely that the quality of holiness (al-qudūsiyya) follows the quality of transcendent glorification (al-subbūḥiyya) in meaning and rank. For al-subbūḥ is He who is declared incomparable with every evil, while al-qaddūs is He who is pure of even the supposed possibility of any deficiency touching Him through blemish. As for the secret of the specification of this attribute to Enoch, peace be upon him, it is because the perfection he attained was by the way of sanctification (taqdīs)—that is, his spiritualization and his stripping away of natural murkiness and the accidental deficiencies arising from elemental temperament. And since it was revealed concerning his affair, peace be upon him, that he was raised to a lofty station, the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, began his wisdom-chapter by mentioning elevation and explaining its divisions and rulings. He said: ("Elevation has two relations")—he meant two elevations, as he made explicit in his abridgment called Naqsh al-Fuṣūṣ. But since elevation in itself is a relative matter, and since the distinction of each of its two divisions from the other is likewise by relation and attribution to its qualified subject, he expressed them by saying "two relations"—or the meaning is: elevation has two relations.

Jāmī

it is indicated by His saying, the Exalted: "and We raised him to a lofty place" [Mary: 57]—this indicates either the loftiness of Enoch, peace be upon him, or the loftiness of his place, which is the sphere of the sun. As for his elevation, it is dependent on his place; as for the elevation of his place, it is from two aspects: one, with regard to what is beneath it of celestial and elemental multiplicities; the other, with regard to rank relative to all the spheres. Since his elevation by the first consideration is evident, the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, refrained from explaining it and addressed the second by saying

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

Know that the highest of places in terms of direction is the Throne which delimits the directions. The sphere of the Sun was made the highest of places only in consideration of the fact that it is the heart of the celestial spheres and their center, and upon it the world of celestial spheres revolves—not in the sense that it is the center around which the spheres physically rotate, but rather as it is said that the body revolves around the heart, that is, from it the effusion (fayḍ) reaches the entire body. That is, from its spirituality the effusion reaches all the celestial spheres, just as from its star all the spheres are illumined. Through it the stars are connected, as governors are connected to the sovereign. Even though each of them has its own particular spirituality, receiving from the divine presence an effusion particular to it, just as every soul among souls has a particular effusion from the direction of its entity (ʿayn), between which and the Real there is no intermediary, and a general effusion by means of the First Intellect, the Universal Soul, and the rest of the spiritualities of the seven governing celestial spheres. Thus he established, within the very notion of elevation of place, the elevation of station. It is as if he said: the highest of places, by elevation of station, is the place upon which the mill of the world of celestial spheres turns. For that reason he established elevation of place for the Throne by his saying:

Jāmī

i.e., by station and rank, not by direction, for the most elevated by that consideration is the Throne, as will come. ("the place upon which the sphere of the celestial orbs revolves") and from whose spirituality the effusion (fayḍ) reaches the rest of the spheres, just as from its star all the spheres are illuminated—just as it is said "the body revolves around the heart," meaning that from it the effusion reaches the rest of the body ("and it is") i.e., the place upon which the spheres revolve

Ibn Turka

This is because the Sun has the rank of the perfection of manifestation and making-manifest (iẓhār). And since Enoch was the possessor of the holy wisdom (al-ḥikma al-quddūsiyya)—and sanctification (taqdīs) is the extremity of the perfection of the Real's manifestation, as you have known, and its abode of manifestation—therefore his spirituality was specified by it. And we said "it is in the position of the pole in the millstone of the world" because it is situated at the center.

But God knows best that the matter is contrary to what he said in every respect, and this ordering cannot be grasped except by unveiling and direct witnessing, or by the report of a truthful one, since there is no transmitted report of it. Likewise, the people of instruction, the adherents of observation, and the masters of astronomy did not know what they knew of this except by way of sensory unveiling—they observed the movements of the stars and inferred thereby the nature of the Divine making and the ordering of the configuration, and they erred in some respects and were correct in others, their views differing in this regard in a well-known manner current among the people of this discipline." Thus far his words. From this it is known that the establishing of these two spheres is among the particularities of his complete unveiling. His saying:

because the zodiacal signs are determined therein by the fixed stars in the sphere of the stations, called by the practitioners of astronomy (ahl al-hayʾa) the sphere of the zodiacal signs. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

Ibn Turka

is an explanatory apposition (ʿaṭf bayān) for the undifferentiated sphere, for although no star appears in it, yet according to the ranks beneath it there appear in it circles dividing it into twelve signs, so it contains differentiation.

al-Qāshānī

- It appears that what is meant by these two is the Universal Soul and the Universal Intellect, i.e., the Supreme Spirit. For these are two degrees in existence greater than the degrees of the spheres. The Spirit is the Tablet of Decree (lawḥ al-qaḍāʾ) and the Soul is the Tablet of Destiny (lawḥ al-qadar); thus they are higher than the celestial bodies, and he called them two spheres only metaphorically, just as he metaphorically called the sphere of earth a "sphere," even though it does not move nor encompass anything, such that it could be called a sphere in reality. Moreover, demonstrative proof does not preclude the existence of starless spheres beyond the nine. The philosophers were certain regarding the minimum - that is, there may not be fewer than what they mentioned - but regarding the maximum there is no certainty. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

al-Qayṣarī

He also placed these two spheres, in his Futūḥāt, in Chapter 275, above the Atlas Sphere, and mentioned therein: "Indeed the Atlas Sphere is the throne of engendering (ʿarsh al-takwīn), that is, from it generation and corruption (al-kawn wa-l-fasād) appear by means of the four natures. The level (mustawā) of the All-Merciful (al-Raḥmān) is the Throne, above which there is no body, and the level of the All-Compassionate (al-Raḥīm) is the noble Footstool. The philosophers (al-ḥukamāʾ) also did not assert definitively that above the nine there is no other sphere, but they did assert definitively that there could not be fewer than this [number]."

Jāmī

He, may God be pleased with him, also affirmed these two spheres in chapter two hundred and ninety-five of the Futūḥāt. He mentioned that the Atlas sphere is the throne of coming-to-be (ʿarsh al-takwīn), that is, generation and corruption appear from it by means of the four natures, and that the "seat" (mustawā) of the Merciful (al-Raḥmān) is the Great Throne above which there is no body, and the "seat" of the Compassionate (al-Raḥīm) is the Noble Throne-seat (Kursī). The philosophers, too, did not assert definitively that there is no sphere above the nine; rather, they asserted definitively only that it cannot be fewer than that

which is the Throne of the All-Merciful (al-Raḥmān), containing no differentiation whatsoever. The Five Thrones: Know that the Shaykh established five real thrones: the Throne of Life—which is the Throne of the He-ness (huwiyya)—the Throne of All-Mercifulness, the Mighty Throne, the Noble Throne, and the Glorious Throne. The Throne of Life is the Throne of the Will (al-mashīʾa)—as was noted at the outset of the book—and it is the level of the Essence, and it is the Throne of the He-ness. God, Most High, said: "And His Throne was upon the water" [11:7], thus attributing it to the He-ness and placing it upon the water—and this is why we called it "the Throne of Life"... because of His saying, Most High: "And We made every living thing from water" [21:30]—so it is the Greatest Element... and it is the Name of Names and foremost among them... And "the Glorious Throne" is the First Intellect, which is the Supreme Pen. And "the Mighty Throne" is the universal rational soul, which is the Preserved Tablet. And "the Throne of All-Mercifulness" is the body of the Whole (al-jism al-kull). And "the Noble Throne" is the locus of differentiation. And he established a sixth, relative throne that has no [independent] existence, namely the Cloud (al-ʿamāʾ), which is the Throne of Bewilderment. Returning to the mention of the spheres: this is the ruling on what is above the sphere of the Sun.

i.e., Mercury (and the sphere of the Moon and the sphere of the Ether), i.e., Fire (and the sphere of Air and the sphere of Water and the sphere of Earth). His expression — may God be pleased with him — for these four by the term "sphere" (kura) here indicates that the application of "celestial sphere" (falak) to them previously was done by way of predominant usage (taghlīb)

al-Qayṣarī

That is, inasmuch as the sphere of the Sun is in the middle of the celestial spheres, it is elevated in place relative to what is beneath it, and elevated in station inasmuch as it is the pole and the center upon which the celestial spheres revolve, just as the world revolves upon the existence of the Perfect Human. He does not mean by it the technical "pole" of the practitioners of astronomy, which is the point at each of the two ends of the axis. It is also possible that the pronoun in his saying:

Ibn Turka

Herein lies an indication that elevation from this respect belongs to it, without this precluding another's having elevation from another respect. Elevation of Station for the Muhammadans: All this concerns elevation of place.

which is the loftiest of places by elevation of place, so Enoch was elevated by elevation of place, not by elevation of standing, since standing is a description pertaining to his place, not to him [personally]. For nothing was established for Enoch by the divine text except elevation of place, not elevation of standing, and the establishment of elevation of place does not entail the establishment of elevation of standing. So elevation of standing was not established for him by the text. (As for elevation of standing, it belongs to us by the divine text

of this height. And He transcends place, not rank.] Height of rank belonged only to the Muḥammadans, because the Oneness of the All-Comprehensive (wāḥidiyyat al-jamʿ) is the highest degree in existence, and it is the degree of Muḥammad, upon him be blessings and peace. God Most High, in the unicity of the Essence (aḥadiyyat al-dhāt) through Absolute Existence, transcends every delimitation (qayd), and thus possesses essential height (al-ʿuluww al-dhātī). For every delimited thing is, in respect of its identity (huwiyya) - that is, the reality of unconfined existence - the Absolute itself; it is [something] by virtue of Him, while in itself it is nothing. It has no degree apart from existence by which height could be considered relative to it. So God is the Absolute Most High solely in respect of the Essence, not relative to anything, and He is with the Muḥammadans in this height because of their annihilation (fanāʾ) in the unicity of their existence through Him. He transcends place because of the absence of delimitation and because place is place through Him - but He does not transcend rank, since the Absolute is higher in degree than the delimited. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

al-Qayṣarī

That is, the highest place belongs to him by divine text (al-naṣṣ al-ilāhī), while the loftiness and station belong to us, because he did not attain to annihilation (fanāʾ) in the Real and subsistence (baqāʾ) through Him; rather he underwent spiritual discipline until the forms of his humanity and the attributes of his human nature were exchanged for divine attributes and spiritual forms. He did not attain annihilation in the Essence, which necessitates being characterized by essential elevation and absolute station; therefore the station of the spirituality of the sphere of the Sun became his. That station belongs to—he, may God be pleased with him, said: 'I mean the Muhammadans. The Exalted said:'
