So when the knower (ʿārif) becomes heedless of some presence, or of [several] presences, while he is witnessing some one of the presences, preserving the form of his creation that is in it, all the forms are preserved through his preserving that one form in the presence of which he was not heedless. For heedlessness is never all-encompassing, neither in general nor in particular. Here I have made plain a mystery whose disclosure the folk of God have ever been jealous to guard against, because it contains a refutation of their claim that they are the Real. For the Real is not heedless, whereas the servant cannot but be heedless of one thing rather than another.

The servant (al-ʿabd) said: The gnostic's creation through spiritual aspiration (himma) occurs through his gathering together in his thought and imagination (wahm) toward bringing something into existence, attaching his aspiration to that, and exerting dominance of the self over it, for aspiration is creative. Since the cause requiring the existence of that creation is the concentration of aspiration upon its existence, the concentration of the heart, the gathering together of its faculties, and presence (al-ḥuḍūr), it is necessary to maintain the continuation of that cause so that the thing created by aspiration may remain in existence - unlike God's creation, for His creation is not through the gathering of faculties, though it does require the directedness of the Divine Names, and moreover, it is not accompanied by total presence from all aspects, for nothing whatsoever escapes Him - unlike one who creates by aspiration. For whenever such a person becomes heedless of what he has created, the cause requiring the manifestation of the intended thing in his creation lapses, and thus the thing created by aspiration ceases to exist through the lapse of its cause. However, the gnostic, if he is not heedless absolutely - rather, if he becomes heedless of it from one aspect while remaining present to it from another aspect - preserves, through what is present in one presence, what he has become heedless of from the aspect of another presence. An example: a gnostic gathers together with his heart and the loftiness of his aspiration toward some cosmic event or creation, whether universal or particular. Through sustained attachment of aspiration and the exertion of the self's dominance by gathering his concern (himm) and imagination (wahm), he finds, outside the locus of aspiration, that intended thing existing. But the continuation of its existence depends upon the continuation of its cause, which is presence and concentration. So whenever he becomes heedless, existence is stripped away from those things - especially if he has attached his aspiration to some cosmic event and then becomes absent from the abode of sense-perception and the presence of the witnessed world through sleep, for instance. Then no cause remains requiring the manifestation of that thing, since his aspiration is not attached to it at that moment, and so it ceases to exist. But the gnostic who is versed in the sensory world and the world of imagination (khayāl) and image (mithāl), and in the interconnection of these presences with one another through the Real, does not become heedless of the form of what he has created in the presence of sense-perception while he is in the imaginal or imaginative world. He witnesses it as created therein, existent, and thus preserves it; and through that imaginal or imaginative form, his sensory form is preserved. Understand this, God willing, for in it is subtlety - so be subtle and refined in grasping it. He (may God be pleased with him) said: 'I have made clear here a secret concerning which the people of God have always been jealously protective against its being revealed, because of what it contains by way of refuting their claim that they are the Real. For the Real is never heedless, whereas the servant must inevitably become heedless of one thing while not of another. So from the standpoint of preserving what he has created, he may say: "I am the Real" - but his preservation of it is not the Real's preservation.' The servant said: They are jealously protective of the revelation of such a secret only lest the intruding pretender gain access to it and thereby come to know the difference between the two kinds of creation and the two kinds of preservation, and thus refute them. He (may God be pleased with him) said: 'We have now explained the difference. From the standpoint of his becoming heedless of a form or its presence, the servant is distinguished from the Real. And he must indeed be distinguished - even while preservation of all the forms persists - by his preserving one single form among them within the presence from which he is not heedless. This is preservation through inclusion (bi-l-taḍammun), whereas the Real's preservation of what He has created is not thus; rather, His preservation extends to every single form specifically and individually. This is a matter which, I inform you, no one has ever set down in a book - neither I nor anyone else - except in this book. It is thus the orphan and the unique gem of its time. So beware of becoming heedless of it, for that presence - in which presence remains for you together with the form - is like the Book of which God has said...'

in all the Presences,

al-Qayṣarī

if the realized gnostic (al-ʿārif al-mutaḥaqqiq), who is characterized by all stations and qualified by every name and presence, is not heedless of that form in any presence thereof, because whatever occurs in external existence must first have a form in the presence of knowledge (al-ḥaḍra al-ʿilmiyya), then the intellectual-Pen presence, then the Tablet presence, then the heavenly and elemental ones and what is composed from them. So if his aspiration (himma) preserves that form in one of those higher presences, that form is preserved in the lower presences as well, because it is the spirit of the lower forms. And if his aspiration preserves it in the lower presences, it is also preserved in the others, since the existence of the effect necessitates the existence of its cause, and the existence of the form is evidence for the existence of the meaning - even if his aspiration is heedless of it - due to the necessity of the correspondence of forms among the divine presences. This is corroborated by the states of the possessors of miraculous graces (karāmāt) when they report the occurrence of some matter or its cessation: they witness it first in the heavenly presences, then what they witness comes to exist in the lower presences. Indeed, if the perfect one (al-kāmil) were to become heedless of that form in all the presences, being occupied with something else, it would then cease to exist. But heedlessness regarding all the presences is not possible for anyone, whether perfect or imperfect

al-Qayṣarī

that is, neither in the generality of creatures nor in their particularity, because they must necessarily be occupied with some matter among the matters that are loci of manifestation (maẓāhir) of the divine names. The utmost of it is that the gnostic knows that all matters are theophanies (majālī) and loci of manifestation of the Real, while others do not know this. So it is not possible for heedlessness to become total such that the human being is not occupied with some presence among the presences of the Real - neither in the generality of the presences, that is, in all of them, nor in their particularity, that is, in a specific presence. This applies to the perfect one. As for others, they may become heedless of a specific presence, even though they do not become heedless of all of them

So if the form is preserved in one of the higher presences, it must necessarily also be preserved in the lower worlds, because of the interconnection of the worlds with the presences, in their universals and particulars. The difference between the creating of the Real and the creating of the servant

Jāmī

i.e., [regarding] their particulars. For if the gnostic is absent from one Presence, he must be present with another Presence; so he is never heedless of all the Presences together, even though he does not act [i.e., is not present] with respect to all the Presences together. Hence the gnostic's creature only ceases to exist through his turning away from it absolutely. An example of this is when the gnostic creates, by the comprehensiveness of his himma, outside the locus of his himma — such as, for instance, in sense-perception — a sensible form, and preserves it by the continuity of his witnessing and his sensory presence with it; then whenever heedlessness befalls him, through sleep for instance, and he becomes absent from [the realm of] sense, this sensible form ceases from the rank of sense and does not persist, because the condition of its persistence is precisely the gnostic's sensory presence with it, and that condition has now lapsed — unless the gnostic has mastered all the Presences, being a knower of the Presence of sense and the Presence of imaginal form and imagination, and of the connection of these to one another, with the comprehensiveness of his himma pervading from some of them to others. In that case, even though he becomes heedless of the Presence of sense and of witnessing the form of his creature/existent therein, he nevertheless witnesses it in the Presence of imagination or imaginal form as created/existent, and so preserves it; thus its sensory form is preserved through [the preservation of] its imaginal form. Among the branches of this principle is what the Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, mentioned in the Futūḥāt: that the Substitutes (al-abdāl), when they leave a place and wish to leave behind a substitute for themselves in that place — in a matter in which they see some benefit and nearness [to God] — leave a person in the form of one of their own men, such that no one who perceives the sight of that person doubts that he is that very man, though he is not; rather he is a spiritual person left behind by [the Substitute's] deliberate substitution, known from him. And among [such phenomena] also is what has been witnessed of some of this group: that one of them was present at a single moment in different places, or entered a house with closed doors and a sealed interior — i.e., he left it — and the like of such marvels. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
