So, insofar as [there is] the preserving of what has been created [by him], it is his [right] to say "I am the Real" (anā al-ḥaqq). But his preserving of them is not the Real's preserving; we have already made the difference clear. And insofar as he has been heedless of some form and its presence, the servant has become distinct from the Real. And he must inevitably become distinct, while the preserving of all the forms nonetheless remains through his preserving of a single one of them in the presence of which he has not been heedless. This is preserving by implication (bi-l-taḍammun). The Real's preserving of what He has created is not like that; rather, His preserving is of each form specifically and individually. This is a question about which I was informed that no one has set it down in a book, neither I nor anyone else, except in this book. So it is the orphan pearl of the time, its unique gem.

al-Qāshānī

- and its singularity is evident. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

Bālī Zāde

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

. It is the comprehensive one for what has occurred and what has not occurred, and it is in itself a Qur'an, for whoever fears God, 'He grants him a discrimination (furqān)'] The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: (And this), i.e., and this matter about which I have informed you

Jāmī

because his creating what he creates and his preserving it pertain to him only insofar as he is Real (ḥaqq), not insofar as he is a servant.

al-Qayṣarī

since the Creator and Preserver is the Real. But since the servant never ceases to be distinct from the Lord, he clarified the distinction by his statement

al-Qayṣarī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

that is, the servant's preservation of that form is not like the Real's preservation of it

Ibn Turka

that is, the one entity's being heedless of the created form and its presence

Jāmī

i.e., the servant's preservation of a form he has created is not identical in every respect

Bālī Zāde

i.e., the servant's preserving (of it is not the Real's preserving) of what He has created (and we have explained the difference) between the Real's preservation and the servant's preservation, so they are jealous, because of this difference, of its being disclosed through a claim of lordship. (And from the standpoint of his not being oblivious) i.e., from the standpoint of the servant's obliviousness — for 'mā' is a verbal noun here

Jāmī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

i.e., in respect of his heedlessness (of some form and its Presence, and his not preserving what he has created),

al-Qāshānī

- the particle 'mā' in 'mā ghafala' (that he becomes heedless) is a verbal-noun particle (maṣdariyya), meaning: insofar as his heedlessness of some form [occurs]. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said:

al-Qayṣarī

that is, between the Real's preservation and the servant's preservation. This is that the servant must necessarily be heedless of some presences, and his preservation of that form within them is by way of implication (taḍammun) and following (tabaʿiyya). Unlike the Real, for He has presence always with all the presences, since (no affair distracts Him from another affair.)

Only al-Qayṣarī comments here.

al-Qayṣarī

(mā) here is a verbal noun particle (maṣdariyya); that is, from the aspect of his heedlessness

al-Qayṣarī

that is, of that form fixed in one of the presences, and its presence

Bālī Zāde

and of the Presence in which that form is established

al-Qayṣarī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

since his preservation of it in that case is only by virtue of his preserving one form among those forms in the presences, and within the implication of preserving it

Ibn Turka

this is on the supposition that preservation does not persist

Jāmī

a distinction that is manifest in two respects: the first is the occurrence of heedlessness to him; the second is the non-preservation of his creature, on the supposition that preservation-by-implication does not obtain. But on the supposition that preservation-by-implication does obtain, though [the author] has [already] alluded to the distinction of the servant from the Real by explaining the difference between the two kinds of preservation, he nevertheless returns to it again for further elaboration. He said:

Bālī Zāde

from this respect, namely, obliviousness in the servant and the absence of obliviousness in the Real

Ibn Turka

also (by his preservation) - that is, the servant's preservation

Jāmī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

of what he has created (by implication). That is, the preservation of the form of what he created in its Presence occurs only as implied within his preserving another form in another Presence.

Bālī Zāde

the servant from the Real

Bālī Zāde

the servant (of it), i.e., of the Presence in which that form was. (This) preservation

Ibn Turka

Thus it is known that the criterion of the matter, in differentiation and distinction, is according to rulings and effects alone, as it is said: "The entity is one, but the ruling differs." And that too is by mere consideration, for the creations of the servant and of the Real are both preserved, except that the former is by implication and the latter is specifically - and that is a distinction which the intellect takes into account

Bālī Zāde

The Greatest Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said

al-Qayṣarī

that is, what He has created

Jāmī

from the side of the Real, exalted is He (that no one has inscribed it in a book—neither I nor anyone else—except in). The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: ("It is the orphan pearl of the age and its unique one. Beware lest you be heedless of it, for that presence in which presence with the form remains for you is like the Book of which God said, 'We have neglected nothing in the Book' (al-Anʿām 38), for it comprehends what occurs and what does not occur. And it is itself a Qurʾān, for the one who is godfearing toward God, 'He will make for him a discernment (furqān)' [al-Anfāl 29], and this is like what we mentioned in this matter concerning that by which the servant is distinguished from the Lord. This discernment is the loftiest discernment.") This Book is the orphan pearl of the time and its unique one; beware lest we be heedless of it. And he, may God be pleased with him, gave the reason for enjoining against heedlessness of this matter by his statement:

al-Qayṣarī

since He is never heedless of anything whatsoever. (This is a matter concerning which I was informed) that is, they informed me in unveiling (kashf)

Ibn Turka

which is the distinguishing one in the rank of act, comprehensive in it on account of the loftiness of its ruling and the preciousness of its purpose

Bālī Zāde

in the world of imaginal forms (mithāl), just as I informed you in the world of sense. (that), i.e., the matter

al-Qayṣarī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

that is, of this matter and its reality. His statement

Ibn Turka

because the time had not yet reached what would require the disclosure of the realities and the manifestation of their secrets as they truly are, for that is among the特性 [properties] of the Seal-bearing age and the subtleties of its generated things, which the age had never before given birth to anything generated from it like that

Bālī Zāde

i.e., this matter

Ibn Turka

Then there is no doubt that since the principle of distinction and separation, and the source of differentiation and otherness, is nothing but mere relational traces and judgments, the single entity cannot in itself be separated and divided. So all the Presences are simply the single entity that speaks and addresses. To this he alluded in his address: "So beware lest you be heedless of it, for that Presence in which presence with you remains together with the form is like the Book of which God said,"

Bālī Zāde

he enjoined that one not be oblivious of this matter for the following reason

The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked.
