الصَّلَاهُ مَحَلُّ الْمُنَاجَاهِ وَمَعْدِنُ الْمُصَافَاهِ تَتَّسِعُ فِيهَا مَيَادِينُ الْأَسْرَارِ وَتُشْرِقُ فِيهَا شَوَارِقُ الْأَنْوَارِ

The ritual prayer is the place of intimate converse and the mine of mutual sincerity: in it the fields of the innermost secrets open wide, and in it the dawning rays of the lights break forth.

Ibn ʿAbbād

لان فيها يكون محل الثناء والدعاء والمناجاة مخاطبة الاسرار عند صفاء الاذكار للملك الجبار … وهى زوال الاكدار الكونية بينك وبين ربك حتى يصفو قلبك وسرك فيصفو لك حينئذ شهوده ويمحو ذاتك وجوده … حتى تتكاثر عليك فى الظهور … فيكون قلبك نورا على نور وهذه العبارات الست معانيها متقاربة

This is because in it lies the place of praise (*thanāʾ*), supplication (*duʿāʾ*), and intimate converse. Intimate converse is the addressing of the innermost selves to the Compelling King (*al-Malik al-Jabbār*) when the invocations (*adhkār*) have become pure… And pure communion is the removal of the creaturely turbidities (*al-akdār al-kawniyya*) between you and your Lord, until your heart and your innermost self (*sirr*) become pure. Then the witnessing (*shuhūd*) of Him becomes pure for you, and His existence (*wujūd*) effaces your own self (*dhāt*)… until they multiply upon you in manifestation (*ẓuhūr*)… and so your heart becomes light upon light. These six expressions are close to one another in meaning
