He knew the weakness present in you, so He made their number [the acts of obedience] few; and He knew your need of His bounty, so He made the supplies they bring abundant.

Ibn ʿAbbād

This belongs to the bounty of God Most High that He has made customary for him [the servant] with Him. The reducing of their number lies in His making the fifty [prayers] five, and that is a lightening (*takhfīf*) from Him, because of what He knew of the existence of [the servant's] weakness. The multiplying of their succours lies in His assigning to the five the reward (*thawāb*) of the fifty, and that is a bounty from Him to him, since he was in need of it. To Him, then, be praise and thanks for that.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
