Among the things that show you the reality of His overpowering, glory be to Him, is that He has veiled you from Him by what has no existence alongside Him.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The sayings of the gnostics (*ʿārifūn*) and the realizers of truth (*muḥaqqiqūn*), together with their allusions (*ishārāt*) and their ecstatic experiences (*mawājīd*), agree on what we mentioned just before this: that whatever is other than God Most High is sheer nonexistence (*ʿadam maḥḍ*) with respect to its own essence, and cannot be described as existing alongside God, glory be to Him, the Exalted. For were it so described, that would amount to partnership (*shirka*) and duality (*ithnayniyya*), and that contradicts the sincere purity of divine oneness (*ikhlāṣ al-tawḥīd*).

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
