He veiled the lights of the inmost hearts with the dense coverings of outward forms, out of reverence for them, lest they be cheapened by being put on display and lest they be cried out for sale by the tongue of renown.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The lights of the innermost secrets are hidden from direct sight (*ʿiyān*) only because of the dense coverings of outward appearances with which He has veiled them. Yet complete manifestation (*ẓuhūr*) ought to belong to them alone, for they are lofty in rank and great in worth. So He exalted them above being cheapened by being displayed, and guarded them from being proclaimed by the tongue of renown among those who are other than God (*aghyār*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
