Let God's regard upon you eclipse the regard of creatures upon you, and be absent from their turning toward you by witnessing His turning toward you.

Ibn ʿAbbād

This meaning is the very reality (*ḥaqīqa*) of sincerity (*ṣidq*) in servanthood (*ʿubūdiyya*) to God, to which he alluded in the matter preceding this one. It is this: that one have no awareness (*shuʿūr*) of whatever reaches him from creatures by way of regard and turning toward him, nor any longing (*tashawwuf*) for it, nor any seeking (*ṭalab*) of it. Rather, his awareness, his longing, and his seeking are to be confined to what reaches him from God: His regard for him and His turning toward him.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
