Do not look out for a time when you are free of the others [al-aghyār: whatever is other than God], for that cuts you off from finding vigilant attentiveness to Him in the very state in which He has placed you.

Ibn ʿAbbād

When God Most High establishes a servant in one of the secondary causes (*al-asbāb*), it is incumbent upon him to give it its full due and to hold fast to proper courtesy (*al-adab*) within it. He should not wait expectantly for a second moment in which he will be free of it, for his hoping for that second moment keeps him from fulfilling the claim of the first moment (*al-waqt*) in what he has been placed in, and from rendering to it what is owed to it.

The opening of his commentary only; the whole of it runs over pdf 29–30 (printed p. 25) of the print: follow the link to the page images.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
