Do not travel from one created thing to another created thing, for then you will be like the donkey at the millstone: it keeps moving, yet the place it travels to is the very place it set out from. Rather, travel from the created things to the Maker of things: "and that to your Lord is the final end" (Q 53:42). And consider his saying (God bless him and grant him peace): "So whoever's emigration is to God and His Messenger, his emigration is to God and His Messenger; and whoever's emigration is to some worldly gain he would attain, or to a woman he would marry, his emigration is to that for which he emigrated." So understand his saying (upon him be blessing and peace), and reflect on this matter, if you are one possessed of understanding.

Ibn ʿAbbād

Working in pursuit of recompense and degrees, or of attaining lofty ranks and stations (*maqāmāt*), is a deficiency in one's spiritual state (*ḥāl*) and an adulteration (*shawb*) of the sincerity (*ikhlāṣ*) of one's works. This is what is meant by journeying from one created thing (*kawn*) to another. The cause of it is that regard for the self (*iʿtibār al-nafs*) still remains: the self wants some rank to come to it, or wants to obtain some divine gift (*mawhiba*) through its own striving. … In this prophetic hadith there is a pointer to the meaning he has mentioned. The place that calls for consideration and reflection is, and God knows best, his words in the second case: "his emigration is to that for which he emigrated." That is, he has no share in the arrival (*wuṣūl*) and nearness (*qurb*) granted to the one who emigrated to God and His Messenger.
