Our Lord is too exalted for the servant to deal with Him in ready payment while He repays him on deferred credit.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The commentary: The recompense for one's dealings (*muʿāmala*) with God is not confined to the Abode of the Hereafter. Rather, the Real (*al-Ḥaqq*), exalted is He, may sometimes reveal a sample (*unmūdhaj*) of it to certain of His friends (*awliyāʾ*) in this world, one that spurs them on to striving (*ijtihād*) in works, and through which they come to verify (*yataḥaqqaqūn*) that those works have truly been accepted in every circumstance. That is because of the immensity of His generosity and the all-embracing reach of His bounty, majestic and exalted is He.

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
