مَتَى أَعْطَاكَ أَشْهَدَكَ بِرَّهُ وَمَتَى مَنَعَكَ أَشْهَدَكَ قَهْرَهُ فَهُوَ فِى كُلِّ ذَلِكَ مُتَعَرِّفٌ اِلَيْكَ وَمُقْبِلٌ بِوُجُودِ لُطْفِهِ عَلَيْكَ

Whenever He gives to you, He makes you witness His goodness; and whenever He withholds from you, He makes you witness His overpowering. In all of this He is making Himself known to you, and turning toward you with the very presence of His gentle kindness.

Ibn ʿAbbād

المطلوب من العباد ان يعرفوا مولاهم بما هو عليه من الصفات العلية والاسماء الحسنى ولا سبيل لهم الى معرفته الا بتعرفه لهم وتعرفه لهم انما يكون بما ينزل بهم من النوازل ويورده عليهم من الاحكام

What is required of the servants is that they know their Master through the lofty attributes (*al-ṣifāt al-ʿaliyya*) and the most beautiful names (*al-asmāʾ al-ḥusnā*) that are His. They have no way to knowledge of Him (*maʿrifa*) except through His making Himself known (*taʿarruf*) to them, and His making Himself known to them comes about only through the events (*nawāzil*) He sends down upon them and the decrees (*aḥkām*) He brings to bear upon them
