It may be that He opens to you the door of obedience, yet does not open to you the door of acceptance; and it may be that He decrees a sin for you, and it becomes a means to arrival.

Ibn ʿAbbād

The servant (*ʿabd*) ought not to look at the outward forms (*ṣuwar*) of things; let him look rather at their realities (*ḥaqāʾiq*). For the forms of acts of obedience do not entail that acceptance exists for them, because of the defects (*āfāt*) they may contain that impair the sincerity (*ikhlāṣ*) within them, and that is what prevents acceptance from existing for them. And the existence of the form of a sin does not entail being distanced (*ibʿād*) and driven away (*ṭard*)

Ibn ʿAbbād's Arabic: the opening of his commentary on each passage, transcribed from the page images of the Cairo 1319/1901 print and read twice (each comment links to the page where his commentary on that passage begins; the rest of it is on the following pages, not transcribed). English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
