مَعْصِيَةٌ أَوْرَثَتْ ذُلًّا وَافْتِقَارًا خَيْرٌ مِنْ طَاعَةٍ أَوْرَثَتْ عِزًّا وَاسْتِكْبَارًا

A sin that leaves behind it abasement and a sense of need is better than an act of obedience that leaves behind it a feeling of might and arrogance.

الذل والافتقار من صفات العبودية والعز والاستكبار مناقضان لها لانهما من صفات الربوبية ولا خير فى الطاعة اذا لزم عنها شئ مما يناقض صفات العبودية لانها تحبطها وتبطلها

Abasement and neediness are among the attributes of servanthood (*ʿubūdiyya*), while might and haughtiness are contrary to it, for these two are among the attributes of lordship (*rubūbiyya*). There is no good in an act of obedience when something contrary to the attributes of servanthood follows necessarily from it, because that thing renders it void (*iḥbāṭ*) and nullifies it
