That is, if her name were inscribed (he did not say here "the letters of her name", because the sense we mentioned concerning the charmer (al-rāqī) is not present in writing her name on the army's banner), that inscription would intoxicate whoever was beneath the banner. This is a great mubālagha (hyperbole), because the intoxication of those beneath the banner by the writing of the wine's name above the army's banner is a wondrous marvel at which hearts and minds are bewildered. (The iʿrāb (grammatical analysis)): fawqa is attached (mutaʿalliq) to ruqima; ismuhā is the nāʾib fāʿil (deputy agent) of ruqima; dhālika al-raqmu is the fāʿil (agent) of askara, and man is its object placed before it; taḥta al-liwāʾ is the ṣila (relative clause) of man, i.e. that inscription would intoxicate those settled beneath the banner. In the verse there is ṭibāq (antithesis) between fawqa and taḥta. The al- here too is for al-ʿahd al-khārijī (external reference), as [said] before.

Al-liwāʾ is the standard, and it is lesser than the rāya (banner). Al-jaysh is the troops, or those marching to war or otherwise. By "the army's banner" he alluded to the ṭarīqa (path) unfurled for each of the perfect, realized shaykhs of the Sufis, beneath which the aspiring wayfarers (murīdūn) walk in the war against their selves, to traverse their distances to the maʿrifa (gnosis) of their Lord. Thus the banner of the Qādirī army, which Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Kīlānī raised for those who travel on his path, is lowliness and brokenness; the banner of the Muḥyawī army, which our shaykh, the Greatest Shaykh Muḥyī al-Dīn ibn ʿArabī (God sanctify his secret), raised for those who travel on his path, is beneficial knowledge and elevating action; and the banner of the Shādhilī army, which the perfect gnostic Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī raised for those who travel on his path, is the abandonment of self-direction (tark al-tadbīr). And so every shaykh has a particular path, which is his unfurled banner and his well-known standard. The "aboveness" of the banner is a kināya (metonymy) for the beginning of the murīd's affair at the start of his wayfaring on that particular path.

The banner, i.e. the aforementioned banner. Those beneath the banner are the murīds (aspirants) who are sincere in surrendering their selves to the rule of the path of their shaykh, whose path they have bound themselves to.
