He (God Most High have mercy on him) has begun to explain the qualities of the wine in a manner of honoring and ennobling her, and said: tuhadhdhibu, i.e. this wine refines the characters of the nadāmā, i.e. the boon companions who keep company over drink with the loved ones. The refining of characters means purifying them of the things in them that are disapproved of among those of sound intellect.

That is, is directed (yastadillu), since hidāya (guidance) is gentle direction toward a path that leads to what is sought. The agent of yahtadī is man in his words man lā lahu ʿazm. Lā here is negating, ʿazm is the mubtadaʾ (subject) and lahu a khabar (predicate) placed first, i.e. no resolve exists for him. Resolve, in the station of prudence (ḥazm), is counted among the fine traits of character, not absolutely.

It is resolve upon good rather than evil. Resolve upon matters is one of the traits of human character, and its path is its channel appointed for it by the Sharīʿa, [namely] the good and the abandoning of evil. And his words man lā lahu ʿazm: the meaning in that is that the human being who has no resolve toward the good that counts in the Sharīʿa reaches the path of the sciences by drinking this aforementioned wine. For this reason he made it indefinite, to magnify it; otherwise no human being is free of resolve upon something, and [if] his resolve was upon falsehood, it was counted as having no consideration.
