Exception

الِاسْتِثْنَاءُ

Verses 316–331 · chapter 26 of 78

The chapter gives the case of a noun excepted with illā: accusative after a complete affirmative sentence; after negation, either following the excepted-from noun as a substitute or accusative; and whatever the operator requires when the sentence is 'emptied' (the excepted-from noun is not mentioned). It then covers repeated illā, exception with ghayr and siwā and their variants, and the exceptive words laysa, lā yakūnu, khalā, ʿadā and ḥāshā, including when these last three are verbs and when they are prepositions.

AI note on the transcription: Ṣadr: مَا اسْتَثْنَتِ الَّا مَعْ تَمَامٍ يَنْتَصِبْ. The transcription's استثنيت ('I excepted') has an extra yā; the verb is feminine استثنت, with illā (treated as a feminine word) as its subject, and استثنيت breaks the metre. Illā is recited with hamzat al-waṣl (…nati-llā) for the metre. ʿAjuz: the transcription's أنتخب ('I choose') should be انتُخِبْ, the passive 'is preferred', whose subject is إتباعُ at the start of the next bayt. This is the reading of the standard editions.

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 316–317Arabic

حكم المستثنى بإلا النصب إن وقع بعد تمام الكلام الموجب سواء كان متصلا أو منقطعا نحو قام القوم إلا زيدا وضربت القوم إلا زيدا ومررت بالقوم إلا زيدا وقام القوم إلا حمارا وضربت القوم إلا حمارا ومررت بالقوم إلا حمارا فزيدا في هذه المثل منصوب على الاستثناء وكذلك حمارا

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 3632 · vol. 2, p. 208 ↗

…as in lam yafū illā mruʾun illā ʿAlī 'they did not keep faith, except one man, except ʿAlī'. [Here mruʾun is a substitute for the subject of yafū, and the other item is accusative, ʿAliyyan; ʿAlī is the pausal form at the rhyme.] In meaning, their status is the status of the first [each of them is excepted from the judgement, as the first item is].

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 323–325Arabic

فلا يخلو إما أن تتقدم المستثنيات على المستثنى منه أو تتأخر

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 3715 · vol. 2, p. 223 ↗
