The Nominal Sentence: the Mubtadaʾ (Subject) and the Khabar (Predicate)

الِابْتِدَاءُ

Verses 113–142 · chapter 9 of 78

This chapter defines the mubtadaʾ and its khabar, including the case where a descriptive word takes a fāʿil that stands in place of a khabar. It explains the forms the khabar takes (single word, sentence, adverb or prepositional phrase), when an indefinite may begin the sentence, and when the khabar must come after or before the mubtadaʾ. It closes with the omission of either part, the cases where omitting the khabar is obligatory, and multiple khabars for one mubtadaʾ.

Apply analogy: negation is like interrogation [so mā sārin dhān, 'these two are not travelling by night', is the same construction]. Something like fāʾizun ulū r-rashad, 'The rightly guided are successful', is sometimes permitted [with the descriptive word supported by neither interrogation nor negation].

AI note on the transcription: وَقِسْ وَكَاسْتِفْهَامٍ النَّفْيُ وَقَدْ — a wāw has dropped before كاستفهام. The metre requires it (wa-qis wa-kas | tifhāmi-nin), and with it the phrase reads as a nominal clause: 'and negation is like interrogation'.

Make that pronoun overt in every case [whether or not ambiguity would arise] wherever the derived khabar follows a mubtadaʾ whose meaning it does not describe [the action belongs to someone else], e.g. zaydun ʿamrun ḍāribuhu huwa, 'Zayd, ʿAmr is hitting him — he [Zayd] is.'

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 1287 · vol. 1, p. 209 ↗

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 129–131Arabic

ينقسم الخبر بالنظر إلى تقديمه على المبتدأ أو تأخيره عنه ثلاثة أقسام قسم يجوز فيه التقديم والتأخير وقد سبق ذكره وقسم يجب فيه تأخير الخبر وقسم يجب فيه تقديم الخبر

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 1393 · vol. 1, p. 231 ↗

Always put first the khabar of a mubtadaʾ that is restricted, as in mā lanā illā ttibāʿu aḥmadā, 'We have nothing except following Aḥmad.'

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 132–135Arabic

أشار في هذه الأبيات إلى القسم الثالث وهو وجوب تقديم الخبر فذكر أنه يجب في أربعة مواضع

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 1436 · vol. 1, p. 239 ↗

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verses 138–141Arabic

حاصل ما في هذه الأبيات أن الخبر يجب حذفه في أربعة مواضع

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 1494 · vol. 1, p. 247 ↗

They predicate two or more khabars of one mubtadaʾ, as in hum surātun shuʿarāʾ, 'They are nobles, poets.'

    Ibn ʿAqīl on verse 142Arabic

اختلف النحويون في جواز تعدد خبر المبتدأ الواحد بغير حرف عطف نحو زيد قائم ضاحك

    Ibn ʿAqīl, OpenITI line 1558 · vol. 1, p. 256 ↗
