The text, the witnesses and the method
Base text (Beirut). Dār al-Kutub al-ʿIlmiyya 2005, ed. ʿĀṣim al-Kayyālī, from the manuscript copy of ʿAbd al-Salām al-ʿImrānī al-Khālidī (copied 1399/1979 from the 1265/1848 copy of the author's grandson al-Rashīd). Every Arabic word here was read from a page image of the scan a_ia-20240408-mortada-max (402 pp.; PDF page = printed page + 2 at every page checked: pp. 7 to 232). Beirut's vowelling is kept where printed. Square-bracketed Arabic headings are the editor's, not the author's [editor's heading].
Second witness. Aisha Bewley, The Meaning of Man (Diwan Press, 1977), the earlier English, which her front matter says was made from the copy kept in the author's zāwiya (the library record names an edited Arabic text by ʿAbd al-Kabīr al-Munawwara). We cannot see her Arabic, so each reading drawn from her English is given as "her English implies …". Her English is in copyright and is only paraphrased here. Where no Bewley text was compared, the note says "Bewley not collated" (sayings 10, 23, 24, 28, 29).
Conventions. ¹ ² … align Arabic and English sentence by sentence; ‖ is a page turn; a corrected word is printed in our text and the Beirut reading is given in a [FIX] note. The author's colloquial Maghribi grammar (accusative predicates, «وهذان الخصلتان», feminine agreement with maʿnā) is kept as printed and not counted as a slip. In the English, square brackets mark words supplied and [?] an uncertain construal. [check] marks a reference or attribution not confirmed; [DIALECT — needs a human reader] marks Moroccan Arabic that has not been read by anyone able to read it. Sayings 1–9 and 11–12, 14–17, 19–21, 26, 30 reuse the pilot (printed pp. 17–26) after re-reading pp. 17–20 against the page images; the rest are new. Note tags: FIX, VARIANT, TRANSLATORS DIFFER, SOURCE, TERM.
