And to them belong the ruling property and the effect in everything that has concrete existence; rather, it is their very self and not other than them — I mean the entities of the concrete existents — while they have never ceased to be intelligible in themselves. So they are the manifest inasmuch as [they are] the entities of the existents, just as they are the nonmanifest inasmuch as [they are] intelligible. Thus every concrete existent depends upon these universal matters, which cannot be removed from the intellect, and whose existence in entity cannot be an existence by which they would cease to be intelligible. And it is the same whether that concrete existent be temporally bound or not temporally bound: the relation of the temporally bound and of what is not temporally bound to this intelligible universal matter is a single relation. Except that a ruling property returns to this universal matter from the concrete existents, in accordance with what the realities of those concrete existents demand — as with the relation of knowledge to the knower, and of life to the living. For life is an intelligible reality, and knowledge is an intelligible reality distinct from life, just as life is distinct from it.

al-Qāshānī

That is, universal matters (al-umūr al-kulliyya) possess the ruling property and effect in everything that has entified existence, like the effect of knowledge and life upon that which is qualified by them, so that it is judged to be living and knowing, and it is not so judged unless the very reality (ʿayn) of life and knowledge is in it. This is the meaning of his statement

al-Qayṣarī

Quotes words that differ from our text (wavy underline).

That is, these universal matters, which have no entities in the external world detached from the specifying determination that determines them, and the subjects to which they attach, have a ruling and an effect upon cosmic entities and external realities according to their existence and their perfections. As for the first [i.e., the ruling], it is because entities are caused by the Names, and the Name is the Essence together with a specific attribute. So entities, in respect of their multiplicity, are not realized except through attributes, and these are these universal matters which have no entities in the external world. For this reason the philosophers (ḥukamāʾ) also held that the knowledge of the Necessary Being is effective (fiʿlī) and is a cause for the existence of existents, and likewise power and will, which are expressed as the Divine Providence (al-ʿināya al-ilāhiyya). As for the second [i.e., the effect], it is because the existent entity, if it did not have life, would not be described as living, nor would it be characterized by the kinds of perfections, since knowledge, power, and will are all conditioned upon life. Likewise, if knowledge were not obtained, there would be no will or power for it, because these two do not attach except to what is known. And so it is with all the attributes. Thus these universal matters rule over the natures to which they attach, such that it is said of them that they are living, possessed of knowledge, will, and power, and there follow upon them what is required of them in the way of acts and effects, since there is no doubt that the nature that exists through knowledge distinguishes between things, and through will it specifies, and through power it is capable of acts. His words:

to affirm that what has entified existence is the very identity of these intelligible matters qualified by accidents and concomitants, because the single reality which is the reality of all realities is the Divine Essence, and by consideration of its determinations (taʿayyunāt) and self-disclosures (tajalliyāt) in its multiple levels, it becomes multiple and becomes diverse realities: substantial ones that are followed [i.e., primary] and accidental ones that follow [i.e., secondary]. So entities, in respect of their multiplicity and their being entities, are nothing but the very identity of various accidents that have come together and thus become a specific substantial reality, as he mentioned at the end of the Fuṣṣ of Shuʿayb. Do you not see that the animal is the sensate body that moves by will, and the body is that which has length, breadth, and depth? So the animal is an essence (dhāt) which has these accidents together with sensation and voluntary motion. And just as these accidents came together in this specific essence and it became an animal, so too, if other accidents are joined to it, such as speech and neighing, it is called human and horse [respectively]. Thus the single essence, by consideration of multiple attributes, becomes multiple substances, and the root of all of this is the Divine Essence whose attributes are identical with It. So his statement:

Ibn Turka

It is possible to construe "the ruling" as pertaining to the essential concomitants (dhātiyyāt) of those [universals], and "the effect" as pertaining to the accidents (aʿrāḍ), though the first [construal] is more precise. Now what is understood at first glance from this expression is that nothing of those universals exists in the external [world] except their effects and rulings alone; so he turned away from that by his saying

Jāmī

among those qualified by it. For life, for example, its ruling property upon the one qualified by it is that he is living, and its effect in him is knowledge and its concomitants.

He said: So the umūr kulliyya (universal matters) have ḥukm (ruling) and athar (effect) in every thing that has wujūd ʿaynī (entitative being), that is, in which external being is obtained. [This is] like the effect of a universal quality among the universal matters, such as life and knowledge, in whatever, of the Ḥaqq (the Real) and of khalq (creation), is qualified by it. So it is judged of that qualified [thing] that it is living and knowing; but it is not judged of it with this quality except at the time when it itself is the very [entity] of life and knowledge.

(Rather, the amr kullī (universal matter) is the very [self] of the aʿyān (entities) of the entitative existents; it is not other than them. That is, the universal matter, with its ḥaqāʾiq (realities) and qualities, is their very [self] by way of its ẓuhūr (manifestation), with ruling and effect, in the entities of the entitative existents. It is not so by way of its universality and absoluteness. For absolute universal matters, such as wujūd (being), knowledge and life, [taken] as such (min ḥaythu hiya hiya), with regard to [their] attribution to the Ḥaqq (the Real) and to khalq (creation) cut off, are absolute realities. They are applied to each one of the Real and creation that is qualified by them, and they in turn subsist by it. So the universal realities, in respect of being absolute from attribution, do not pass away from being bāṭin (non-manifest). And while being non-manifest, they also do not pass away from wujūd ʿaynī (entitative being), by reason of the manifestation of their rulings and traces in the entities of the existents. Rather, the universal realities, by their reality, are manifest and self-disclosing in the whole of the thing that has entitative being. And what exists with entitative being is the manifestation and tajallī (self-disclosure) of the universal matter, which is delimited according to the maḥall (locus). So the universal matters' not passing away from being non-manifest is in consideration of their being universal. And the consideration of their being universal is a second consideration; it is preceded by the consideration of the matters being stripped of qualification by the realities of universality. So the universal matters, with whichever of the Real and creation they subsist by, are manifest with their realities in the whole of it. For being, in the eternal and in the originated, is 'it is it', and knowledge too is thus in every knower. So the universal matters, in every entitative existent, are the very [self] of its own self; existentially and in witnessing (shuhūdan) they are not additional to it. But intellectually it is not so, for the intellect strips its being from the existent, and then conceives it as additional to being; and this is an intellectual matter.)

Ibn Turka

Then, when those universal matters come to have their specific quiddity (māhiyya nawʿiyya) determined, this has three degrees: the first of these is the differentiation of the rulings and effects, which is by way of matter and form, and this is the reality of the species alone. The second is the collective configuration (hayʾa jamʿiyya) between the two, which lifts the otherness [between them], and this is the species itself. The third is the differentiation of the external individuals. So within his expression he alluded to these levels, turning from the first to the second, and explaining the latter by the third — alerting [us] to the fact that the first differentiation is purely a matter of consideration (iʿtibār) with no real weight, that the second differentiation is identical with the [act of] unification (jamʿ), that the entified existent likewise has a collective unity, and to other subtleties besides — so do not be heedless of them. Thus the explanatory clause refers to the disjoined pronoun, not the conjoined one, contrary to what would lead to the misconceptions that prompt forced interpretations — as some have insisted upon — and this accords with what you have heard from the masters of speculative theology: "All the divisions of universals exist through the existence of the species itself in the external [world], just as the species exists together with the individual; and that differentiation among universals and their distinction is only in the intellect." So they are intelligible (maʿqūla)

al-Qāshānī

is the entities of the attributes, not the entities of the things qualified [by them], for the qualified things are also a universal meaning, namely absolute man (al-insān al-muṭlaq), which is identical with this [particular] man together with the qualification of particularity. So this is [analogous to] the relation (nisba) of absolute life and absolute knowledge to the two qualified attributes

is the entities of the attributes/descriptions, not the entities of the things qualified [by those attributes], since the things qualified also have universal matters, namely the natural universal (al-kullī al-ṭabīʿī). But there is difficulty in this [interpretation]. For what is meant is that these universal matters, which have no essence existing in the external world, have a ruling and an effect upon external existents—rather, they are the very identity of these external existents. For the manifest (ẓāhir) and that which manifests it (maẓhar) are united in external existence, even though they are multiple in the intellect, because the discussion concerns universal matters that have no entities in the external world other than these entified existents. And the benefit of the turning-away (iḍrāb) does not become apparent except according to this meaning. And the explanation given in his statement

is an explanation of the nominative pronoun. It is also possible to take it as an explanation of the genitive pronoun. If the nominative [pronoun] refers to the universal matters — the universal matter being so construed — then in every case entification (al-ʿayniyya), based on the single reality which is the reality of all realities, is the Divine Essence; and with respect to its determinations (taʿayyunāt) and self-disclosures (tajalliyāt) — [Text of the Fuṣūṣ]: and it has never ceased to be intelligible in itself. So it is the manifest (al-ẓāhir) insofar as it is the entities of the existents, just as it is the nonmanifest (al-bāṭin) insofar as it is intelligible. Thus the reliance of every concrete existent upon these universal matters — which cannot be removed from the intellect, nor can they exist concretely with an existence by which they would cease to be intelligible. Whether that concrete existence be temporal or non-temporal, the relation of the temporal and the non-temporal to this intelligible universal matter is one and the same relation. However, a ruling property from the concrete existents refers back to this universal matter, according to what is required by — [Jāmī's commentary]: its multiple levels, which multiply and become different realities — substantial ones that are followed and accidental ones that follow. So every entity, insofar as it is distinguished from what is other than it, is nothing but the very accidents of a thing that have converged in a single entity, thus becoming a concrete external entity. Thus he mentioned it at the end of the bezel of Shuʿayb. (And) these universal matters, despite being the very entities of the existents...

As for their being nonmanifest, it is because, from the standpoint of the intellect's conceiving them as universal, general matters which the intellect abstracts and takes universally, the mere conception of them does not preclude the occurrence of shared participation (shirka) in them. So those universal ḥaqāʾiq (realities) are manifest in respect of the aʿyān (entities) of the existents. [This is] because they are realized with their reality in every external existent. Besides that, [it is] because the universal ḥaqīqa (reality) is, in every existent, the very [self] of wujūd (being), since in respect of being it has no distinction from being. For example, knowledge: if the eternal (qadīm) is qualified by it, it is named eternal; and if the originated (ḥādith) is qualified by it, it is named originated. In the eternal, knowledge is in reality eternal, and in the originated (muḥdath) it is in reality originated. For it corresponds to every thing that is qualified by it with its essence […]. But in relation to itself it does not change from [its] reality. "And it is in every essence by its reality and its entity, and it has no existential entity other than the entity of the qualified; so it is, according to its root, intelligible, not existent," as it is.

Just as those universal ḥaqāʾiq (realities) are bāṭin (non-manifest) in respect of their intelligibility; that is, in consideration of their universality and intelligibility, they are not distinguished by ẓuhūr (manifestation). "So this reality does not ever cease to be intelligible; the intellect is not able to deny it. And its ruling does not cease to be existent and manifest in every existent." (Verse:) "Every existent: it has a form in it, and there is no form in its essence. So its ruling is nothing other than its essence, and that ruling is not among its signs.

is a result following from his statement: "and it has the ruling and effect in everything that has entified existence." That is, since it has been established that entified existents are determined and multiplied only through attributes, and these attributes are these universal matters, the reliance of every entified existent is necessarily fixed upon these universal matters, which are intelligible realities. The "lām" in "upon these matters" (li-hādhihi al-umūr) carries the meaning of "ilā" ("to/upon"). For the natures, by their very essences, require that these [attributes] attach to them and that they be characterized by them, since these are their perfections; so they, in respect of their perfections, rely upon these universal matters. And these matters cannot be denied to be intelligible, nor can they exist among entities without attaching to their subjects. The predicate of his statement "So the reliance" is what is connected to the adverbial phrase, namely "necessary" (wājib) or "fixed" (thābit). It is also possible that the "lām" in his statement "upon these universal matters" carries the meaning of "ilā," connected to "the reliance," with its predicate omitted, its estimation being: "So the reliance of every entified existent upon these universal matters is necessary."

with its masculine form being by consideration of the word "amr" [matter, being masculine]. In that case its meaning would be: rather, these universal matters are the very identity of the entities of the entified existents, not something else. And this is identical to the first meaning. It has also been said: its meaning is: rather, the universal matter, such as knowledge and life, is the very identity of the two attributes [i.e., knowing and living] the existence of which negates [the separateness of] that which is qualified [by them], not something else besides the two of them. In his words "li-hādhihi al-umūr" ("for these matters"), the lām is attached to an adverbial [phrase]. That is, it means: So the istinād (reliance) of every entitative existent is established for these umūr kulliyya (universal matters), whose removal from the intellect is not possible, and whose wujūd (being) in the ʿayn (entity) is not possible with a being by which they would pass away from being intelligible. That is, the reliance of an individual existent is always on these universal matters, whose removal from the intellect is not possible. [This is] since they are manifest in respect of the aʿyān (entities) of the existents, and the being of the matters in the manifest entity is not possible. [It is] since they are manifest in respect of the entities of the existents, and the being of the matters in the manifest time is not possible with a being by reason of which they would pass away from being intelligible. For the universal matters' being intelligible is in consideration of their universality, and their being the very [self] of every entitative existent is in consideration of [their] ḥaqāʾiq (realities). So by their universality they are bāṭin (non-manifest) and intelligible, and by their realities they are manifest in every entitative existent. And it is permissible that in his words "li-hādhihi al-umūr" the lām be in the sense of ilā (to), attached to 'reliance', with the predicate omitted, i.e. "the reliance of every entitative existent upon these universal matters is necessary."

with an existence by which they would cease to be intelligible] for even if it is said that "universal natures have existence in the external [world]", this is only within the external individual identities and individuals, and so they do not thereby cease from intellective being — since this differentiation, which entails the establishment of those natures, belongs only to the intellect when they exist within it. In this expression there is an indication that those universals and the rest of the intelligible quiddities are only states and accidents attaching to the nonmanifest [dimension] of Existence, necessarily concomitant with it, not ceasing from it — contrary to what the majority of speculative theologians hold. My master and grandfather, the Seal of Verification in this station, has established the root of this matter in al-Ḥikma al-Mutqana and other books; whoever wishes may consult it there. The relation of entified existents to universal realities. Then, the form of the perfect triplicity (tathlīth kamālī) whose ruling's mastery, as you have repeatedly observed, is manifest in this Word — its ruling's sovereignty has pervaded the universals which are the nonmanifest [dimension] of that Word. And having alerted [you] to two stations of it — the first unveiling its nonmanifest degrees, the second its manifest loci of appearance — he now proceeds to complete it with a third, which clarifies what follows upon those degrees and loci of appearance, namely the absolute (iṭlāqī) rulings with which the universal is qualified in its intelligibility, and what is generated, upon their mixture, of the collective relation (nisba jamʿiyya). And having finished verifying the two descriptions in a manner that conveys the absolute aspect belonging to them — expressing both by negative concepts — he begins to clarify the generated relation with which the universal is qualified from the aspect of the entities, and alludes first to the principle of the differentiation of those entities, namely time, by his saying

meaning: these universals, even though they are, in every entified existent, identical with it, this does not remove them from being intelligible. For their being intelligible and nonmanifest pertains to them from the standpoint of their being universal, while their being identical with every entified existent pertains to them through their realities, not through their universality — since there is a distinction, within the intellect, between conceiving their universality and conceiving their reality, whereas there is no distinction between their reality and concrete existence. Likewise, their being intelligible and universal does not remove them, in this respect, from being, through their reality, identical with every entified existent in the sense that they add nothing to it and are not distinguished from it. He (may God be pleased with him) means by 'temporally bound' the temporally originated, perishing thing of the [created] world. Thus the manifestation of these nonmanifest, intelligible, universal matters through the temporally originated entities, whose existence is temporally bound and not perpetual, is likewise temporally bound and not perpetual — like the existence of Zayd, for instance, and his knowledge and his life, which are not perpetual but temporally bound. And their manifestation for that whose existence is neither temporally bound nor finite is likewise neither temporally bound nor finite, owing to the adjoining (inḍiyāf) of these universal, relational, intelligible realities to every entified existent and their manifestation within it according to what it is and in accordance with what its essence (dhāt) yields. He (may God be pleased with him) said: (However, a ruling pertaining to the entified existents reverts to this universal matter according to what the realities of those entified existents demand — like the relation (nisba) of knowledge to the knower and of life to the living. Life is an intelligible reality, and knowledge is an intelligible reality distinct from life, just as life is distinct from it. Then we say of the Real, exalted is He: that He has knowledge and life, so He is the Living, the Knowing. And we say of the angel: that it has knowledge and life, so it is the living, the knowing. And we say of the human being: that he has life and knowledge, so he is the living, the knowing. The reality of knowledge is one, and the reality of life is one, and their relation to the knower and to the living is one and the same relation. Yet we say of the Real's knowledge: that it is eternal (qadīm), and of the human being's knowledge: that it is originated (ḥādith). So observe what the relation (iḍāfa) has produced, in terms of ruling, within this intelligible reality.) The servant, may God support him, said: Know that the universal realities are absolute (muṭlaqa); they possess, from the standpoint of being what they are, an essential particularity (khuṣūṣiyya dhātiyya) which their relation to the entified existents does not remove them from — like the reality of knowledge, for instance, which is a meaning subsisting in the knowing essence, by which it is called 'knowing,' and which, at the level of verification, is an expression for the apprehension of the known thing and its unveiling as it is in itself and as it is in its concrete reality, in a manner of encompassment and distinction from other than it — this is the reality of knowledge. Its relation and attribution (nisba/iḍāfa) to the Real or to creation does not remove it from this specific reality; rather, what accrues to it from its being attributed to every entified existent, once so attributed, is that it be within it according to what it is. So if that to which it is attributed is an absolutely eternal existent, its knowledge is likewise absolutely eternal; and if that to which it is attributed is originated, delimited, of temporally-bound existence, its knowledge is likewise originated and delimited. This is what these realities require on condition of the adjoining (inḍiyāf) [to a particular locus]; they remain thus as long as that condition is conjoined with them. And this is evident. He (may God be pleased with him) said:

And it is equal whether that entitative existent be muwaqqat (temporal, time-bound) or non-temporal: the relation of the temporal and the non-temporal to this intelligible amr kullī (universal matter) is one relation. The Shaykh (may God Most High be pleased with him) said in the Futūḥāt, in the sixth chapter: "If a thing is found not from a preceding non-existence, like the being of the Real and His attributes, it is said of it: an eternal existent, because the Real is qualified by it. And if a thing is found from non-existence, like the being of what is other than God, which is the originated that exists through another, it is said of it: originated. And it is in every existent by its reality, for it does not accept division." So the wujūd (being) of the Ḥaqq (the Real), who is qualified by absolute being, exists by His own essence; it is not existent from a preceding non-existence. So His being, in consideration of its ẓuhūr (manifestation) and tajallī (self-disclosure) in the jamʿiyya (gathered totality) of the divine and engendered marātib (levels), which are beneath the ghayb dhātī (essential Unseen), is undelimited and non-temporal. And of what exists from non-existence in relation to itself, such as the First Intellect, the Universal Soul and the enraptured spirits […]; and in sum, the existents beneath the Atlas Sphere are temporal. So [as for] what is meant by a non-temporal entitative existent, whether the manifestation of the Real in the divine and engendered levels be considered, or the existents above the Atlas Sphere be considered: the relation of the temporal entitative existent and of the non-temporal entitative existent to the universal matter is equal. That is, the manifestation of this universal matter in every entitative existent is according to the maḥall (locus). As the essence of the locus requires, it manifests as eternal in the eternal and as originated in the originated. Likewise, its manifestation in the ʿālam (world) of spirits is spiritual and luminous, and its manifestation in the world of bodies is bodily and dark. That is, the relation of the temporal and the non-temporal to this universal matter is one; its manifestation in every thing is according to the locus.

that is, all of them are equal in their reliance upon the intelligible universal matter. (Except that this universal matter has ascribed to it, from among entified existents, a ruling property (ḥukm) corresponding to what the realities of those entified existents demand — like the relation of knowledge to the knower and life to the living. For life is an intelligible reality, and knowledge is an intelligible reality distinct from life, just as life is distinct from it. Then we say of the Real that He has knowledge and life, so He is the Living, the Knowing; and we say of the angel that it has life and knowledge, so it is living, knowing; and we say of man that he has life and knowledge, so he is living, knowing. The reality of knowledge is one, and the reality of life is one, and their relation to the knower and the living is one and the same relation. Yet we say of the Real's knowledge that it is eternal (qadīm), and of man's knowledge that it is originated (muḥdath). So observe what the relational ascription (iḍāfa) has produced by way of ruling property in this intelligible reality, and observe this linkage between the intelligibles and the entified existents. For just as knowledge imposes a ruling upon that in which it subsists, such that it is said of it that it is knowing, so too the qualified thing imposes a ruling upon the knowledge — that it is originated in respect of the originated and eternal in respect of the Eternal. Thus each one becomes both that which is judged-by (maḥkūm bihi) and that which is judged-upon (maḥkūm ʿalayhi). And it is known that these universal matters, though intelligible, are nonexistent in entity (maʿdūmat al-ʿayn) yet existent in ruling property (mawjūdat al-ḥukm), just as they are judged-upon when ascribed to the entified existent. So they accept ruling property in the existent entities but do not accept detailed differentiation (tafṣīl) or division (tajazzī), for that is impossible for them, since in themselves, in every thing qualified by them, they are like humanity (al-insāniyya) in every single individual of this particular species — it does not become differentiated nor multiplied by the multiplicity of individuals, nor does it ever cease to be intelligible.) That is, because the entified existent imposes a ruling upon the unseen universal by virtue of its own reality, and the universal likewise imposes a ruling upon the particular by virtue of its reality. Just as knowledge and life, in relation to God Most High, are ruled to be eternal — which is what His reality demands — while in relation to man and angel they are ruled to be originated, by what the reality of man and angel demands. Likewise knowledge and life impose a ruling upon everything qualified by them, that it is living, knowing. Each of the entified and the unseen has a ruling property over its counterpart according to what it demands, even though the reality of knowledge is a single reality that has not been divided nor differentiated by the difference of the one who possesses it, on account of relational ascription (iḍāfa). Likewise life, and its relation to the two things qualified by it is one relation, not differing. So observe this linkage between the entified existents and [the intelligible universals] — for the unseen intelligibles are universals nonexistent in entity externally in respect of their universality, since every entified existent is a specified particular. The wording of the text is clear. His statement

For just as the universal matters were subject to rulings and effects [from the existents], likewise they impose rulings upon [Text of the Fuṣūṣ]: the realities of those concrete existents, like the relation of knowledge to the knower, and life to the living. For life is an intelligible reality, and knowledge is an intelligible reality distinct from life, just as life is distinct from it. Then we say of the Real, exalted is He, that He has knowledge and life, so He is the Living, the Knowing. And we say of the angel that he has life and knowledge, so he is the knowing, the living. And we say of the human being that he has life and knowledge, so he is the living, the knowing. Except that there is this much: to this amr kullī (universal matter) a ruling returns from the entitative existents, according to what the ḥaqāʾiq (realities) of those entitative existents give. That is, the relation of this universal matter to the muwaqqat (temporal) and the non-temporal is equal. But from the temporal entitative existents a ruling returns to it, and this universal matter is qualified by that ruling. And from the non-temporal entitative existent too a ruling returns, and the universal matter is likewise qualified by that ruling.

These two examples were chosen from among the universals because, among the subtle points this divine wisdom (ḥikma) comprises, is what pertains to the reality of the human and the clarification of his intelligible quiddity, as preceded at the outset of the discussion — these two being the root of what that reality, namely the rational animal, comprises, and indeed the two foremost guides (imāmān muqaddamān) in the presence of the collectivity of the divine names, by which the connecting subtle link (raqīqa irtibāṭiyya) between the Necessary and the possible has been ordered

So life, which is an amr kullī (universal matter), is an intelligible ḥaqīqa (reality); it subsists by the essence of the knower. "Knowledge, in the usage of taḥqīq (realization), is the perception of the thing by what it is and what it is upon in its ʿayn (entity), by way of encompassing and distinguishing [it] from other than it." "Distinguished from life, just as life is distinguished from it." The reality of knowledge is distinguished from life, just as life is distinguished from it.)

The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
