The servant—may God assist him—said: Know that the people of self-disclosures among the possessors of prophethood and the masters of sainthood receive them only according to their preparednesses (istiʿdādāt) and the particularity of their existential receptivities. Likewise, their preparednesses in the arena of concrete existence (al-wujūd al-ʿaynī) occur only in accordance with their nonmanifest preparednesses, which are not made (ghayr majʿūla) [but are given] in the presence of Essential Knowledge. We have already told you before that the form of each one's knownness (maʿlūmiyya) to God, eternally, before his concrete existence, is his reality and his fixed entity (ʿayn thābita), and that this, as such, is not existential matters truly differing from knowledge with real difference, nor added to the Essence of the Knower with an addition that would necessitate multiplicity in His knowledge-based Unity. Rather, it is the form of His relations (nisab), His manifest correlates, His nonmanifest states, and His concrete affairs (shuʾūn), since there is no co-presence of anything else with Him, eternally and everlastingly, always and perpetually: "God was, and nothing was with Him," and He is now as He was. Essential Knowledge necessitated the entification (taʿayyun) of the known things in the presence of Knowledge as they are. They are, then, a relation and relations of relation: like knowledge, knower-hood, and known-hood; lordship and being-lorded-over; manifestness and being-manifested; disclosure and concealment; restriction and absoluteness; entification and non-entification, and so forth. All these realities are His relations and psychic states, and they do not necessitate multiplicity in the entity of Oneness (al-aḥadiyya), just as halfness, thirdness, quarterness, fifthness, and other such relations do not necessitate a multiplicity that would impugn the unity of the One. Multiplicity is only in the arena of knowledge and conceptualization on our part, nothing more. So whenever the self-disclosure of the Self-Discloser occurs to the one to whom disclosure comes, in the presence of concrete existence, it occurs only according to the form of the preparedness of the eternal fixed entity which this recipient of disclosure has, eternally, for the entification of the disclosure from the Essential affair which is his very entity. That is an essential preparedness for this eternal recipient, not made—because the supposition is prior to bringing-into-being and prior to existence, in the presence of the Unseen. So the nonmanifest self-disclosure becomes entified in the Essence, within the unseen receptivity of the recipient of disclosure, eternally, first, according to the form of that nonmanifest, unmade preparedness. Then it becomes manifest, at every time and state, to the recipient of disclosure, in the arena of concrete existence, in that form which is the form of the Real in his concrete entity, or the form of his nonmanifest entity in the Real.
How well he said: 'You are, in the totality, His mirror from one respect and consideration, and He is the mirror of the totality from one respect and consideration.' So whenever He discloses Himself to you, you see in the Real's self-disclosure to you nothing but your own eternal nonmanifest form, if it is an Essential disclosure, or a relational-essential form among the relations. You never see God as being the very entity of the totality, manifest in the form of gathering and Essential absoluteness. And if you do not see Him thus, you have not seen Him. As long as you are you, and have not become the very entity of the totality, you will never see the Real Who is the very entity of the absolute totality, unrestricted by the restriction of entification in the totality and by the totality, and unrestricted by the joining of restriction and absoluteness. So how could you know that you are entified by your original eternal knowledge-form in the very entity of your differentiated, connective, everlasting concrete form, in the mirror-nature of true Existence and the Absolute Real? Just as the one who sees his form or another's form in the mirror sees nothing but the form of the viewer, and cannot see the body of the mirror while absorbed in witnessing and seeing the imaginal form seen—for entified witnessing and specific, individuating vision cannot, at any one determined time, accommodate more than one determined witnessed thing and one individual form—while knowing that the entification of the witnessed form and the occurrence of vision and the attachment of witnessing pertain to nothing but what is in the mirror. This is why the form acquires its [distinguishing] attribute. So understand.
He—may God be pleased with him—said: 'So much so that some who perceived something like this regarding the forms of the thing seen went so far as to hold that the seen forms are between the sight of the seer and the mirror. This is the utmost that such a one could attain of knowledge. The matter is as we have stated and held. We have explained this in al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyya. If you taste this, you will have tasted the ultimate limit beyond which there is no further limit within the capacity of a created being. So do not covet, and do not weary yourself trying to rise to a degree higher than this, for there is nothing beyond it at all, and what comes after it is nothing but sheer nonexistence.'
Clarification of the sayings concerning vision
The servant said: Sayings have differed concerning how vision attaches to the form seen in the mirror. Some say: the likeness of the form is impressed in the mirror, and witnessing and seeing attach to it in the mirror. Others say: the polished, solid body causes the reflection of sight toward what faces the mirror, so that sight perceives it as external to the mirror. It was objected: if that were so, right would not be perceived as left, nor would the form take the shape of the mirror—rather, it would be perceived as it is, external to the mirror. The response given was: the reflection of sight and the visual faculty from the solid, polished body does produce this effect in the mirror of sight, because it is reflected according to the mirror, and thus conveys the form colored according to the locus of the first reflection of sight.
Some said: the form is not impressed in the mirror, but is between the sight of the seer and the thing seen—and that is the extent of their knowledge. It was also said: the form is perceived after the reflection of sight from the polished body, in the World of Imagination (ʿālam al-mithāl). The truth is that if the form were not impressed in the mirror, it would not take on its qualitative shape of roundness or elongation, nor would it be reflected either, even on the view of those who hold reflection—for if it is reflected, it is only reflected after being impressed.
In this matter there are noble inquiries. Among them: if the imaginal form were not impressed in the mirror-nature of the visual faculty, perception would not occur. If its occurrence in the visual mirror-nature were after its reflection on the surface of the external mirror, then right would remain right and left would remain left, because it would be the form of the likeness of a likeness, reflected equal to the original and conforming to it in the seen form in the mirror—but that is not the case. So perception attaches either to the form in the mirror as reflected, or the mirror of sight is reflected toward the form issuing from this solid, polished body according to the shape of the surface—so the likenesses of the forms are reflected in the mirror of sight, and the perceiving faculty perceives them reflected. Similarly, its reflection in the external mirror makes its right the left of the original form, and the upper the lower in some positions, due to the divergence of directions in the lines of sight. The visual faculty perceives it by its own essential light, aided by the light of the external illumination within it according to it—rather, according to its entification in the mirror. So understand.
If you have verified these principles in the visible world, then know: the entification of the Real for you in the mirror of your fixed entity occurs only according to it, and in accordance with its particularity and the form of its preparedness. You see the Real in His Essential self-disclosure to you only in the form of your fixed entity. So your entity, in your seeing of the Real disclosed to you, is like the visual faculty of your eye in your seeing your form in the mirror. You see the Real within you only according to the particularity of your fixed entity—but in the mirror of true Existence, which is, from one respect, like the external light.
This is the highest degree of unveilings and witnessings relative to one such as you—unless your entity should be the very entity of all the fixed entities together, having no particularity that would necessitate restricting the form to a specific mode, but rather having an aḥadī, all-gathering, isthmus-like, perfective particularity. Then the entification of the Real for you would be like His entification in His own entity—rather, the very entification of Himself to Himself—rather, you would be His very entity. So understand.
Below these two witnessings is your witnessing of the Real clothed in the garments of existential forms—luminous, imaginal, spiritual, intellective, psychic, natural, elemental, imaginational, mental, isthmus-like, resurrectional, paradisal, and so forth—all of this according to His self-disclosure from your entity, not from the entity of another. So the highest degree of your witnessing of the Real comes after your realization of your fixed entity. When you become united with your fixed entity, so that you are your entity without any entificational distinction, you see the Real as He sees Himself in you, and you see your entity as a form of the Real in the Real. So understand—though I do not think you will understand, unless you are inspired and made to know by a knowledge you did not previously have. There is nothing higher than this for you, so do not covet and do not weary yourself. There is nothing beyond the Real and His mirror and His Essential manifestation-locus—which is your fixed entity, the form of your knownness to the Real, eternally—except nonexistence. For you, from the standpoint of your fixed entity and the form of your knownness, exist eternally and everlastingly; and you, from the standpoint of your possibility and your concrete existence, are, in entity, nonexistent eternally.
He—may God be pleased with him—said: 'So He is your mirror in which you see yourself, and you are His mirror in which He sees His Names and the manifestation of their properties—and this is nothing other than His very entity. So the matter became confused and ambiguous. Among us are those who were ignorant in their knowledge and said: Incapacity to attain perception is [itself] a perception.'
He—may God be pleased with him—points to the fact that the identity (huwiyya) of the One True Existence is a mirror for the manifestation of the existential concrete individual identities (al-inniyyāt) within it, and by it the entitative realities became manifest. Were it not for the self-disclosure of the True Existence, you would not see your eternal, nonmanifest, knowledge-based form—for you only became manifest in the light of True Existence in your concrete existential form, on the model of your eternal, nonmanifest, knowledge-based form. So True Existence is a mirror for your concrete individual identity, and True Knowledge is a mirror for the form of your nonmanifest, Essential, meaning-based entity, and your eternal identity in your witnessing of yourself and your entity. Likewise, you are a mirror for the Real in His existential self-disclosure and His seeing and witnessing [Himself] through the forms of His Names, His Essential relations, and His Lordly attributes. These relations are nothing but His very entity, not other than Him, since they add nothing to it and do not necessitate multiplicity, and do not impugn the unity of His concrete existence, as we have mentioned.
Since, then, the manifest aspect of the Real—which is you—is a locus of manifestation and a mirror for His nonmanifest aspect from one respect, and in His witnessing and existence He is also a mirror for the manifestation of His nonmanifest relations which are, within it, His very entity from another respect—and likewise these relations are mirrors and loci for the entifications of the One Existence—it becomes true of each of the Real and the creature that he is a locus of manifestation, a manifest thing, and a witness. So the matter became confused and ambiguous to the observer, witnessing became hidden, unveiling became subtle, and the affair became too vast for control, comprehension, and delimitation, and self-disclosure became inaccessible. This produced, in some witnessings and tastes, bewilderment, incapacity, and rapt confusion, so that the possessor of such a state acknowledged incapacity and confessed ignorance—meaning that knowledge of what one knows one does not know is [itself] knowledge, and knowledge of the non-comprehension of knowledge regarding what cannot be comprehended by knowledge is real knowledge of it as such. So knowledge of what is not known—which is ignorance of what, by its nature, knowledge cannot encompass—is the very utmost of knowledge of it; and the refusal to incline toward any specific direction regarding what cannot be confined to it is the true bewilderment of the perfect ones. The falling-short and incapacity to perceive what one is incapable of perceiving is the utmost perception—as Abū Bakr, may God be pleased with him, said: 'Incapacity to attain perception is [itself] a perception.' So understand.
He—may God be pleased with him—said: 'And among us are those who knew but did not say something like this, which is the higher saying; rather, knowledge gave him silence, not what incapacity gave the other. This is the highest one who has knowledge of God. This knowledge belongs only to the Seal of the Messengers and the Seal of the Saints. No prophet or messenger sees [this] except from the niche of the Seal-Messenger, and no saint sees [this] except from the niche of the Seal-Saint.'
The servant—may God assist him—said: The one realized in this witnessing, in this station, is he whose fixed entity and form of knownness to God, eternally, is not restricted to a partial particularity, but is all-encompassing in his locus of manifestation with an aḥadī, all-gathering comprehensiveness that gathers together, in the manifestation-locus of his nonmanifest entity, the realities of all loci of manifestation. For it is the very entity of the entities and the reality of realities. So the Essential self-disclosure to him, and in his receptivity, is an aḥadī, all-gathering, perfective self-disclosure according to his entity and his absolute, aḥadī, all-gathering receptivity. In this self-disclosure he witnesses, through his manifest aspect, both the manifest and nonmanifest of the Real, and through his nonmanifest aspect, both the nonmanifest and manifest of the Real; and through the aḥadiyya of his axial (quṭbī) gathering and his perfective, Real-based particularity, he joins together the two comprehensivenesses of the manifest and the nonmanifest. The Real likewise witnesses him, in the very act of His witnessing him, in the same way—his entity through His entity—with an aḥadī, all-gathering witnessing, unrestricted by entification and confinement to a single entity. So this self-disclosure, in this station, grants him comprehension of the ultimate limit of knowledge, and silence and freedom from bewilderment—rather, it grants him realization of the whole as it truly is, and silence. This witnessing belongs only to the perfective, Muḥammadan, eternal-original, everlasting-final human reality, which is the reality of realities, the aḥadī, all-gathering, eternal-everlasting reality among all the perpetual comprehensivenesses. So understand.
If God grants you the understanding of this and the unveiling of it, or [at least] belief in what we have said, then know: this all-gathering, aḥadī, perfective reality has an aḥadī, all-gathering, perfective entification in the rank of its manifest and nonmanifest aspects, its unseen and its dominion (malakūt). Its manifest aspect is prophethood, and its nonmanifest aspect is sainthood. For each of the two entifications, in the two ranks, there is a form of all-gathering differentiation encompassing all particulars, and a form of the gathering of gathering, joining differentiation with aḥadī gathering. This is the total, perfective, all-encompassing, sealing Muḥammadan Reality, and the human being through whom and in whom it becomes entified is the most perfect locus of manifestation, the clearest mirror, and the most comprehensive locus of manifestation for the Divine Essence Itself, Its attributes, Its character-traits, Its relations and correlations, Its Names, Its acts, Its letters, and Its states.
As for its manifest aspect, which is the direction of its prophethood, it is the mirror of the Essence of Divinity, its manifestation-locus, its locus of manifestation, its viewing-place, and the Throne of the aḥadī, all-gathering comprehensiveness of the necessary realities and the effective properties belonging to Lordship. And its nonmanifest aspect, which is its sainthood, is a mirror for the true, aḥadī, all-gathering, absolute Identity (huwiyya). Each of the two ranks—prophethood and sainthood—has a gathering and a differentiation. And gathering is of two kinds: gathering before differentiation, and gathering after differentiation. Each of the two gatherings has an entification in the two ranks of act, effect, and existence, and of being-acted-upon, being-affected, and possibility—and there is a gathering between the two gatherings in the aḥadī gathering of the two ranks.
The first gathering, in the first, highest rank—belonging to the necessary realities and Divinity, and the subtleties of the Names and Lordship—belongs to God, the One, the Overwhelming, the Unique. The manifest locus of manifestation for this gathering, at the level of differentiation, is the sum total of the worlds, both of command and of creation, in their unlimited multiplicity of genera, species, and differentiations, and their vastness—since the manifestation of the Divine effects and the properties of the Lordly Names, in full and in detail, occurs only in the world as a whole. So all the worlds are loci of manifestation for the details of the Divine Names, and Divinity, which has this all-encompassing gathering-ness comprehending the realities of act, effect, and necessity for its Essence, necessitates the gathering-ness of the gathering of the cosmic, receptive, differentiated realities in the most complete manner, so that its effects and properties may be manifested. This is the sum total of the world. Its locus of manifestation, at the rank of the first, gathering totality, before differentiation, at the rank of gathering locus-of-manifestation-hood, is Adam, peace be upon him, who is the First Human—and from him comes the aḥadī, all-gathering differentiation. Just as gathering precedes Name-based differentiation for God, so too the aḥadiyya of the gathering of the first gathering, after the entitative, cosmic, locus-of-manifestation differentiation, belongs, in form, to the first human.
The aḥadī, all-gathering, locus-of-manifestation differentiation from him occurs in two ways: meaning-based (maʿnawī) and form-based (ṣūrī). For each of the two gatherings, in each of the two ranks of manifestation and concealment—I mean sainthood and prophethood—is either a gathering of differentiation or a gathering of gathering. The gatheredness that is in Adam, peace be upon him, is the gatheredness of the aḥadī gatherednesses of the elemental human, locus-of-manifestation forms before differentiation—so he is a gathering-form that gathers the manifest-hood of the aḥadī, all-gathering loci of manifestation. For this gathering, at the rank of gathering differentiation, there are, as its loci of manifestation, the perfect ones of the human species—the prophets and saints, from Adam, peace be upon him, to the manifest Seal and the nonmanifest Seal.
So the differentiation of the Divine gatheredness—all the Names, beyond enumeration, manifest through differentiation in the differentiated forms of the discriminating (furqānī) world, as mentioned—the forms of the veiling gatherednesses of this discriminating, gathering differentiation are the unbelievers mentioned in the Qurʾān, among them the Pharaohs. And the differentiation of the aḥadī, all-gathering, luminous, Real-based human-ness occurs in the perfect human beings up to the Seal—and the Seal is the aḥadiyya of the gathering of human gatheredness. This rank has an aḥadiyya of gathering of all the praiseworthy qualities and the Essential and Divine perfections.
If this occurs at the rank of the manifest aspect of perfective humanness—which is prophethood—then the human being who is established with this aḥadiyya of perfective gathering is the Seal of the Prophets and Messengers, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh, al-Muṣṭafā, the Messenger of God and Seal of the Prophets, God's blessings and peace upon him, whom God chose, on account of the perfection of the aḥadiyya of the gathering of gathering of the Divine, Lordly wisdoms and the effective necessary realities operative at the perfective human rank. He is the bearer of the banner of Aḥmad and the praise of Praise (ḥamd al-ḥamd), which is the abode of all the praises of gathering and the assemblies of praise. This sealing, prophetic reality informs all the human, locus-of-manifestation realities of the realities of the Divine gathering. This is why 'he was a prophet while Adam was between water and clay'—for the reality of Adam has no entification except in the Divine Water, which is the water of life and innate purity present in the very reality of prophethood. So understand.
If, on the other hand, the aḥadiyya of gathering of all the mentioned perfections and praises occurs in the nonmanifest [aspect] of the perfective, Divine, Essential human rank—which is sainthood—then the human being established with the nonmanifest aḥadiyya of gathering of all perfections: if it is the aḥadiyya of gathering of the specific gathering, then he is the Seal of Muḥammadan Sainthood proper, the most perfect heir of Muḥammad, God's blessings and peace upon him, at the sealing rank. And if it is the aḥadiyya of gathering of the gathering of the [whole] world in the spirit of the nonmanifest aḥadiyya of the perfective human gathering, then the human being established with it is Jesus, the Spirit of God and His Word, the Seal of General Sainthood absolutely, in the final phase of his configuration specific to sainthood.
Once you know these principles, you know that the name of the perfective, all-gathering, aḥadī human reality, by way of correspondence, is 'Muḥammad.' If the gatheredness is from the standpoint of manifestness and prophethood, then its locus of manifestation is the aḥadiyya of the gathering of gathering of the necessary realities, the Divine relations, and Lordship. This specific, sealing gathering has a spirit, a meaning, and a form. The form joins spirit and meaning, since it is the aḥadiyya of gathering of the meaning-based and spiritual [aspects] and their concomitants and specificities. So when the realities and meanings gather together with an aḥadī gathering, the form of the Divine proportioning (taswiya) appears upon them, and God breathes into it, by His own Merciful Breath, the spirit of the aḥadī, all-gathering, perfective gathering, which combines the spiritual gatheredness, the true meaning-based gatheredness, and the human, bodily gatheredness—and this is 'Muḥammad,' God's blessings and peace upon him. The one specified with the manifest gatheredness is the father of humankind [Adam]; the one specified with the nonmanifest, spiritual gatheredness is the Spirit of God and His Word [Jesus]; and the one specified with the gatheredness of the gathering of the aforementioned aḥadī gatherednesses, in the nonmanifest of the true meaning-based rank, is the Seal of Specific Sainthood, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-ʿArabī, composer of the Fuṣūṣ, may God be pleased with him. The gatheredness of this Seal joins together the spirit of gatheredness, its meaning, and its form, and necessitates its manifest aspect through its reality and import. His relation to the Seal of Prophethood is, in reality, like the relation of a biological son; and, [considered as] a spiritual relation, like the relation of a non-biological son. The sealing of the nonmanifest, i.e., of sainthood, is shared between the two.
None among the earlier friends of God attained unveiled knowledge of the station of this specific Seal except the learned Imam Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Tirmidhī al-Ḥakīm, author of 'Nawādir al-Uṣūl,' who belongs to the masters of the highest rank—it was opened to him to glimpse the station of this Seal. When he mentioned it in his books, and it became known from him among the eminent scholars of his age, among the masters of Islam, the souls of those who make claims [to this station] craved this rank, and this became known about them—namely, [the claim to] Specific Sainthood.
I say: the one who joins the spiritual, nonmanifest rank with the manifest rank is the Absolute Saint, whose sainthood is upon the heart of the Muḥammadan Reality, expressed as Special Sainthood—he is ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib in one respect, and the Awaited Mahdī in another respect, because he joins the meaning-based relation with the manifest relation. Jalāl Āshtiyānī [note]. This [rank] did not belong to them [the claimants], and he [al-Tirmidhī] feared for them, lest they make an unfounded, meaningless claim. So he composed a book gathering obscure questions specific to him in the sealing taste (mashrab), stating that no one could explain them properly except the Seal of the Saints, and that the name of this responding Seal would correspond to the name of the questioning Ḥakīm [al-Tirmidhī], may God be pleased with him, and likewise the name of his father would correspond to the name of his [al-Tirmidhī's] father. When the claimants discovered this fact, they retreated, and turned back to God from their aspiration to the station of the Seal and their claim to it.
Then, when this Seal was raised up in the farthest lands—namely, the Maghrib of the Arabs—he explained those questions and clarified the proofs for those indications, and the correspondence between the names occurred just as al-Ḥakīm had mentioned. This was one of the proofs indicating the sealing of this true Seal, whose lineage traces from Ṭayyiʾ to Ḥātim, as we said in one of the poems in his praise, may God be pleased with him, in a treatise of ours which we titled 'al-Nuṣūṣ al-Wārida bi'l-Adilla ʿalā Khātamiyyat Walāyat al-Khuṣūṣ,' in the shining rhyme in mīm, from 'Futūḥ Dār al-Salām':
Verse: A Seal of Ḥātimī origin among the Arabs, / through whom the noble ones of the West prevailed over non-Arabs. / He has, through Ḥawlān, maternal uncles who are chieftains, / and among the nobles of the house of Ṭayy are paternal uncles.
The poem in full is in the aforementioned treatise; seek it there, God willing.
Among the proofs of his sealing is what we have transmitted of his nonmanifest, heart-witnessing which he beheld in Córdoba, of the descent of the spirits of the [seven] planets and the spirits of the lunar mansions—which are twenty-eight, corresponding to the number of [Arabic] letters and their spirits as well—descending in the forms of beautiful, luminous maidens; he intimately consorted with them and deflowered all of them. This witnessing is beheld only by the most perfect heir of Muḥammad, God's blessings and peace upon him, in the specific sealing mentioned—as we argued from this for his sealing in that treatise. Know this.
Among the proofs of his sealing, may God be pleased with him, also, is that between his shoulder blades, in the very place where our Prophet, the Seal of Prophets, God's blessings and peace upon him, had a mark like the button of a howdah, this Seal too had a concavity able to fit something like the button of a howdah—an indication that the sealing of prophethood is an outward, active [property], while his sealing, may God be pleased with him, is an inward, receptive, hidden [property].
He, may God be pleased with him, said in verses he composed concerning one of his witnessings, narrating on God's behalf what the angels said to him, may God be pleased with him:
Verse: When the Real came to me by night, bringing glad tidings / that I am the Seal of the Affair, at the crescent of the month, / and He said to whoever was present at the time / among the Supreme Assembly, from the World of Command: / 'Behold and look upon him, for my mark / of his sealing is in the place struck upon the back.' / And in it: I am without doubt the heir of Muḥammad's knowledge, / and his state, in secret and in open, is within me, / and I am indeed, for the Seal of the Saints, Muḥammad, / a sealing of specification, in settled life and travel.
The poem in full is in the treatise and in the Dīwān.
Among the proofs of his sealing also: he said, may God be pleased with him, in verses at the beginning of al-Futūḥ al-Makkī, composed at the very moment of the witnessing:
Verse: God is greater, and the Greatest is my mantle, / and light is my full moon, and radiance my brightness. / The East is my West, and the Wests are my East, / and the realities of the new creation are my hopes. / The Fire is my West, and Paradise is my testimony, / and distance is my nearness, and nearness my remoteness. / And when I have withdrawn, I am the Imam, and there is no one / whom I leave behind me to come after me.
So he is the Seal. And he said in it, invoking the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, in this most holy witnessing, this most intimate self-disclosure:
Verse: 'O my master, truly I speak,' and he said to me: / 'You have spoken truly; you are the shadow of my mantle. / So praise, and increase in the praise of your Lord, forever, / for I have granted [you] the realities of all things— / from every truth standing by its reality, / that comes to you, owned, without purchase.'
This alludes to what we mentioned of the descent of the spirits, for his capacity, at the time of his coupling. And he also said:
Verse: 'And I am the seal of sainthood without doubt, / by inheritance from the Hāshimite, together with the Messiah.'
Among this is also what he, may God be pleased with him, brought in the Fuṣūṣ, of the sealing stations of perfection in prophethood, from the taste of the elect, for the masters of pure sincerity.
Here the proofs of his sealing shall not be exhaustively pursued in this book, for we have already presented, in the book al-Nuṣūṣ, concerning the sealing of his specific sainthood, what contains healing for the sick and coolness for the burning thirst. 'And God speaks the truth, and He guides to the way.'
He, may God be pleased with him, said: 'So much so that the messengers, whenever they see it, see it only from the niche of the Seal of the Saints. For the messengership and prophethood—I mean the prophethood of legislation and its messengership—come to an end, while sainthood never ends. So the messengers, insofar as they are saints, see what we have mentioned only from the niche of the Seal of the Saints—how much more so those below them among the saints!'
The servant—may God assist him—said: The niche of the Seal of the Saints is an expression for Special Muḥammadan Sainthood, and the niche of the Seal of the Prophets is an expression for the Special, Sealing, Legislative Prophethood—which is a specification from God for His Messenger, by an Essential particularity belonging to him, God's blessings and peace upon him, in this station, necessitating his being the Seal of the Prophets. It is the aḥadiyya of the gathering of the prophethoods that were dispersed among all the prophets—they being the forms of its differentiation, and the Prophet, God's blessings and peace upon him, being the form of its aḥadī gathering. And because prophethood is the manifest aspect of sainthood, and sainthood is its nonmanifest aspect—since prophethood is an expression for a specific relation belonging to the Prophet, God's blessings and peace upon him, between his community and God, insofar as he is an intermediary between God, Most High, and them—this relation is called the 'means' (wasīla) by which his community seeks nearness to God. His sainthood is an expression for the relation between God and the Prophet without any intermediary of anyone—to which he alluded by saying: 'I am not like any of you, I am not in your condition,' and he called it 'excellence' (faḍīla), and urged the community, at the call to prayer, to ask for these two ranks, as one says to him [in the supplication]: 'Grant him the means and the excellence.' For the excellence belongs to the Prophet over his community by virtue of this relation in which there is no intermediary between the Prophet and his Lord.
From the standpoint of this exalted relation, he receives from God, and God sends down upon him the Divine judgment and rulings, concerning himself and his community, containing their manifest, worldly, livelihood interests and their religious, otherworldly, spiritual interests. Then he conveys, from those judgments and rulings, in the forms of the branch-legal dispositions and the pleasing, observed commands and prohibitions—from the standpoint of the first relation, i.e., prophethood—to the community what suits their states, is appropriate for them, and calls them to God and to devotion to Him therein and thereby. Accordingly, every prophet who informs his community on God's behalf of what he was commanded to convey, of what God informed him concerning Himself and His religion, is a prophet-saint—but it does not follow that every saint is a prophet. For the prophet receives his prophethood and the rulings of his sharīʿa through his sainthood, since the reality of sainthood is nearness, authority, and support, and the highest degrees of nearness involve the removal of intermediary—as he said: 'I have, with God, a time in which no angel brought near nor any sent prophet can contain me [i.e., has room with me].' Prophethood occurs only by means of the angel who reveals to the prophet. So the niche of sainthood, though it belongs to the Messenger of God, is nonetheless specified for the one who is entified, established within it—so it is said of it: it is the niche of the Seal of the Saints.
This is the meaning of his saying, may God be pleased with him: 'So much so that the messengers, whenever they see it, see it only from the niche of the Seal of the Saints'—meaning: when God shows the messengers and prophets forms of knowledge and secrets specific to sainthood and nearness, He shows them only from the standpoint of the Sainthood specific to Muḥammad, God's blessings and peace upon him, or from the standpoint of General Sainthood. This is especially true regarding the secret of the Decree (qadar), which is at variance with and distinct from knowledge of the station of the [prophetic] call, [which pertains] to command and prohibition—as Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Khiḍr, peace be upon him, indicated to Moses, peace be upon him, by saying: 'I am upon knowledge God taught me which you do not know, and you are upon knowledge God taught you which I do not know'—meaning that it is not fitting for any one of us to manifest with what is at variance with his rank and station.
The prophet takes, from the Divine wisdoms, what is decreed for him to take, from the standpoint of his sainthood, in three modes: a wisdom specific to him, apart from his community; a wisdom in which his community shares with him; and a wisdom specific to his community, apart from him. The prophet takes these wisdoms only from the standpoint of the niche of sainthood.
Then, since prophethood is a relation between creatures and the prophet, it necessarily comes to an end—meaning that no angel descends to anyone, after the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, with a sharīʿa contrary to this sharīʿa, ever; so it comes to an end for that reason. As for sainthood, it does not come to an end, because the reception from God, His inspiring, His self-disclosing, His teaching, His informing, and His inspiring [ilhām] never cease for the friends of God—for God named Himself 'the Praiseworthy Friend' (al-Walī al-Ḥamīd), but did not name Himself 'the Prophet' nor 'the Messenger.' And if this mentioned secret is not witnessed by the messengers and prophets, even regarding His witnessing, Most High, through the fixed entity, except from the niche of the Sealing Saint, then it is all the more fitting and necessary that the saints witness it only from this niche. So understand.
He, may God be pleased with him, said: 'And even if the Seal of the Saints follows, in ruling, what the Seal of the Messengers brought of the sharīʿas, this does not detract from his station nor contradict what we have held—for he is, in one respect, lower, just as, in another respect, he is higher.'
He means, may God be pleased with him: that following and emulating the sharīʿa of the Seal-Messenger does not detract from the loftiness of the station of the Seal of Sainthood who follows the Seal of the Prophets. For sainthood, in one of its etymological aspects, is the perfection of following the true Divine Messenger, and supporting him and his sharīʿa; and the authority which grants and bequeaths to the follower the nobility of insight and witnessing may, in one respect, be higher than it is in another respect—meaning that the follower, from the standpoint of prophethood, [while] the one followed, from the standpoint of sainthood, is, in his sainthood, higher than him [i.e., than the same person] from the standpoint of his followership. This does not mean that the saint is higher than the messenger—that is not so. Rather, the superiority is between the following saint, insofar as he is a follower gathering the ranks of sainthood, and himself also insofar as he is followed—so he, insofar as he is followed in the stations of sainthood, is higher than he is insofar as he is a follower in the manifest sharīʿa. So understand.
He, may God be pleased with him, said: 'And indeed, it has appeared in the manifest [teaching] of our sharīʿa what supports what we have held, in the merit of ʿUmar regarding the captives of Badr, in the ruling concerning them, and in the pollination of the palm trees—so it is not necessary for the perfect one to have precedence in everything and in every rank.'
The servant said: Since the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, preferred ʿUmar's opinion in the matter of the captives and their affair over the opinions of the [other] Companions, even though he himself was present among them, and likewise said, regarding the pollination of the palm trees, 'You know better the affairs of your worldly life'—thereby establishing for them merit in knowledge of worldly affairs—we know that partial merits, which are not among the requirements of prophethood, if found in someone other than the prophet and not found in him, do not detract from the special superiority belonging to the rank of prophethood, nor do they necessitate the absolute superiority of that person over the messenger; rather, they consist in the absence of anything that would contradict the station of prophethood, its perfection, and its superiority. So understand.
The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: 'Men's regard is directed only to precedence in the ranks of knowledge of God—that is their objective. As for the contingent events of created things, their concerns are not attached to them. So realize what we have mentioned.'
The servant said: The regard of the people of God and His elect is of two kinds. One: shared between prophets and saints, such as specification, nearness, [Divine] good-pleasure, informing and communicating on behalf of God, Most High, knowledge and gnosis of God, witnessing, and self-disclosure. The second: specific to the prophets, insofar as they are followed, legislators, and charged with the Divine commands and prohibitions, by which they render their communities devoted to God and worship Him. The friends of God have no aspiration, desire, or aspiration toward these merits insofar as they are saints; rather, their regard, rivalry, and mutual superiority lie in knowledge of God. So the one with greatest knowledge of God is the most perfect. Since the utmost perfection has been established for the Seal of Sainthood from the standpoint of knowledge of God, his being followed in that respect by other saints and others is likewise established. This merit, specific to him, does not contradict his being a follower [in the sharīʿa], nor does it necessitate his being followed in every respect—just as the lack of knowledge of the pollination of palm trees does not detract from the perfection of the sealing of the Seal-Messenger. This Sealing, Inheriting Saint's followership of the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, extends to rank, essence, state, character, and deeds.
Had I set about detailing the correspondences and matchings occurring between these two Seals, in all we have mentioned of knowledge, station, character, and state, the discourse would have grown long, and inclined those inclined toward it to weariness and tedium. Indeed, his inheritance from the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, was perfected, in knowledge of God and in all the legislated works, in the manner in which the Prophet, God's blessings and peace upon him, performed them, without addition or diminution—striving, in all of that, to attain the perfection of his conduct [bayāʿ]—so much so that, may God be pleased with him, there befell him a dispensation from all the states that had befallen him: his tooth was broken, and his forehead gashed, and throughout his entire life, may God be pleased with him, he never turned aside, for any purpose, twisting his neck or his throat toward any direction. Rather, may God be pleased with him, he would not turn, and if he turned, he turned wholly—just as the Messenger of God, God's blessings and peace upon him, used to do by nature, not by contrivance—together with his conscientious pursuit of following him.
Had you studied the book al-Asrār ('The Secrets') of this Seal, and become acquainted with its secrets, you would know that he followed him in all his stations, witnessings, ascensions, isthmuses, and self-disclosures, in rank, essence, knowledge, state, and character, hair for hair—as we have enumerated some of that in the treatise al-Nuṣūṣ. Praise be to God.
