For he knows what is in God's knowledge concerning him, either through God's informing him of what his entity has given Him of knowledge of it, or through [God's] unveiling to him his fixed entity and the successive transitions of states upon it without end; and this is higher. For he then stands, in his knowledge of himself, at the rank of God's knowledge of him, since the taking is from a single source. Except that, from the side of the servant, it is a solicitude from God that went before for him, [a solicitude] which is among the sum of the states of his entity, which the possessor of this unveiling comes to know when God gives him to see that, that is, [when He gives him to see] the states of his entity.

If his entity is a locus of manifestation for the All-Comprehensive Divine Name, as is the entity of our Prophet and the entity of the Seal of the Saints, God's blessings be upon them, then he is apprised of all entities through his being apprised of his own entity, on account of his entity's encompassing them, just as the Name of which he is the locus of manifestation encompasses all the Names. Now, if these three types of the silent ones are multiplied by the four types derived from the first division, which pertains to the gifts themselves, they become twelve types, so that the total number of types enumerated here is fifty-two. For this number, on the principle of the decades, reduces to the seven upon which the circle of existence and witnessing turns, in addition to other particularities belonging to this number, as will become clear elsewhere, God willing. In enumerating these types he observed the bond of ordering, beginning from the veiled ones and proceeding by degrees, ascending to this type, which is the most complete of the types

To this extent we say that divine solicitude preceded for this servant with this equivalence in the bestowal of knowledge. [Jāmī's Commentary]: (one), namely the fixed entity — for just as God's knowledge attaches to His fixed entity, so He knows its states through it, likewise this perfect one's knowledge attaches to it, and his knowledge of its states is through it; so there is no difference between the two knowers —

This is the furthest limit of the stations of those endowed with unveiling (mukāshafīn) in the second journey. He first set forth the states of the questioners, beginning from the station of the veiled ones and proceeding by degrees to the utmost station of those endowed with unveiling. Know that divine grace (ʿināya), from one respect, is divided into two kinds: a kind required by the fixed entity through its preparedness (istiʿdād), such that the grace follows it; and a kind required by the Divine Essence itself, not by the fixed entity — though all of it ultimately reverts to it. As for the first, it is in accordance with the Sacred Effusion (al-fayḍ al-muqaddas), which is consequent upon the entities and their states and preparednesses. As for the second, it is in accordance with the Most Sacred Effusion (al-fayḍ al-aqdas), which is what constitutes them and their preparednesses. This grace, then, is something followed, since the Most Sacred Effusion is also consequent upon it. The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, intended this first kind, and therefore ascribed it to the states of the servant's entity. (fa-innahu) — the pronoun refers to 'the matter'

— that is, it is not within the capacity of a created being that, when God apprises him of the states of his fixed entity in respect of knowledge, he should be apprised of them, in the state of his being apprised of their states through unveiling and witnessing, in the same manner that the Real is apprised of them through witnessing — because, before the form of cognitive existence is cast upon them (like the mental form, for example, in our minds, or the concrete [existence], like the external form of a thing), they are essential relations having no form; hence it is not possible for a created being to be apprised of them as the Real is apprised of them. One should not suppose that this negates apprisal of the fixed entities absolutely in the state of their nonexistence, for he mentions in his Futūḥāt: 'The traveler in the third journey witnesses all that will be generated from the elements up to the Day of Resurrection, before their existence.' And he said: 'By this one does not merit the Poleship (quṭbiyya) until he also knows their ranks.' Such apprisal is possible only through apprisal of their fixed entities. This, then, is yet another difference between the Real's knowledge of the entities and the servant's knowledge [of them]. The pronoun in (li-annahā) refers to 'the entities.' And since they revert to the essential relations, which are the Divine Attributes, it was ruled that they are essential relations — just as he said in the First Fuṣṣ: 'Rather, it is their very identity (ʿaynuhā), not other than it' — meaning, the entities of existent things. Thus form is negated of them from this respect; otherwise, the entities are an expression for the determined form in the cognitive Presence, and the entities of the possible things also have forms in the external [world], so it would not be true to negate form of them both externally and cognitively. It has also been said that the pronoun in (li-annahā) refers to 'apprisal,' its feminine form being on account of the predicate, namely 'the relations.' But this is open to question, since it is not true of 'apprisal' that it is 'essential relations,' for it is [only] one relation among the relations, not all of them.

The ibnalarabi.com texts sometimes print other hands inside a commentary: Bālī Zāde's glosses inside al-Qāshānī («إضافة بالي زادة»), and notes by the modern editor (al-muḥaqqiq) or compiler (al-jāmiʿ). We cut these out of the commentator's own text and show them as separate entries, each labelled with its author and the line of the file it came from.

Arabic of the commentaries from the OpenITI digital texts (each comment links to its line); Bosnevî's Ottoman Turkish from our collation of two OCRs of the 1873 Istanbul print (each comment links to its page scan at HathiTrust); passages matched to the commentators' quotations automatically.English translations of the commentaries and of the passage are AI (Claude) and marked. Differences are computed by comparing the words each commentator quotes with our working text; they may reflect a different manuscript reading, a paraphrase, or an alignment error. About this text.
