And when you are buried in it [the earth], you are in it and it is your container: "In it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you forth another time" [Q 20:55], because of the diversity of the aspects. "Of the unbelievers" [Q 71:26]: those who "wrapped themselves in their garments and put their fingers in their ears" [cf. Q 71:7], seeking covering, because he "summoned them so that He might forgive them" [cf. Q 71:7], and forgiving (ghafr) is covering (satr). "A single dweller" [Q 71:26]: anyone at all, so that the benefit might be universal just as the summons was universal. "Surely if You leave them" [Q 71:27], that is, if You let them be and abandon them, "they will lead Your servants astray" [Q 71:27], that is, they will bewilder them and bring them out of servanthood to what is within them of the mysteries of lordship. Then they will regard themselves as lords, after having been, in their own estimation, servants; so they are the servants who are lords.

and in allusion to this, he, may God be pleased with him, here described the disbelievers with the two aforementioned attributes, which are an explanation of their disbelief ("any dweller"), meaning (anyone); and Noah, peace be upon him, made the supplication universal, not particularizing some over others,

That is, when you are buried in the earth through the voluntary death (al-mawt al-irādī), you are in the earth together with the Divine Presence—just as he, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: (Die before you die). And likewise through the natural death, if you are among those who have known the stations and the manifestations of the Real's Identity (huwiyya)—as he said: (Death is the believer's gift). Noah, upon him peace, indicated by this the highest station. And by "his household" he meant the believers, just as by the first sense he meant the unbelievers. And your burial in the earth and your bringing forth from it after burial occurs in His saying, exalted is He: "and in it" — i.e., in the earth — ("We shall return you") through voluntary death, so that He may bring you to Him

That is, just as We brought you forth from the world of sovereignty (al-malakūt) to the world of dominion (al-mulk), so too We shall return you to it and bring you forth from it another time for the Day of Resurrection, and the beginning of the afterworldly cycle of subsistence after annihilation in it through the sempiternal Real Existence. This is according to the first of the two meanings of (the earth). And according to the second—that is, We return you to the sovereignty of the earth through voluntary or natural death, and from it We bring you forth another time clothed in the robes of good deeds and vested in the forms of the true sciences that have become an ingrained disposition in your souls—that is (that God might accomplish a matter that was to be done). So each of the felicitous and the wretched settles into his place

All of this is because it fell as a center, and the center gathers together the aspects of multiplicity that are upon the circumference of manifestation and disclosure altogether, for it is the root of that multiplicity. i.e., for the sake of their seeking concealment from Noah's, upon him peace, call. So the believers sought the concealment of their existence by the existence of the Real within the meaningful earth (al-arḍ al-maʿnawiyya), which is the interior (bāṭin) of the entire kingdom (mulk) — just as the unbelievers sought the concealment of their existences by the existence of the Real within the formal earth (al-arḍ al-ṣūriyya), so God disclosed Himself to them by day. They sought concealment only (because) Noah

the meaning is that he, upon him peace, called only those veiled by multiplicity, who worship the forms of the Names apart from Oneness, in order to rescue them from the perdition of wretchedness—which is the differentiation of the faces of the Names—to the salvation of felicity, which is the Oneness of the Face of the Essence; and from the darkness of Majesty (al-jalāliyya) to the light of the Beauty of the Essence (jamāl al-dhāt). So when it became established that they were people of the veil, who worship nothing but the forms of the multiplicity of the Names, and that the call would only increase their veiling, on account of the strength of their satanic disposition and the operative decree of the divine Will working within them by way of Might (al-ʿizza), he called upon his Lord, his Helper, by the Name the All-Subduing, the Avenger (al-Qahhār al-Muntaqim), that He might conceal the forms of their differentiation and their determinations manifest upon the outward face of the "above," within the Oneness of the Name the Inward (al-bāṭin), in its inwardness—just as they had concealed the existence of their preparednesses and had shut themselves off from hearing his call—so that the benefit of the effect of the call would be general, namely their rectification by being returned from multiplicity to Oneness, and their being prevented from persisting in dispersion and remoteness. For the operation of corruption [upon them] is a rectification for them, and a rectification for those believers who remained after them, so that they would not lead them astray, nor destroy them, nor bewilder them—just as the call had been general to them all. That is, do not leave anyone in their abodes (diyār), their abodes being their selfhood (anāniyya), their existence, and that by which each of them is what he is, until the benefit becomes general for the various kinds of unbelievers and those who conceal the Face of the Real and His existence through their faces and their existence, so that each of them may have a share, and none of them be deprived of it, just as the call was general upon them.

for the nations of his time, for the calling is only to what the tongues of their preparednesses (istiʿdādāt) seek, per His saying: "We sent no messenger except in the language of his people" [14/4], and that is what covers them of concealment. Then the establishing of the legal forms (al-ṣuwar al-sharʿiyya) and the concealment of the divine realities, just as it entails the message in the language of his own people specifically, also entails the benefit for all subsequent nations, since those forms persist after those who established them. As for the benefit and the aspect of its generality for the nations, it lies in what prepares them to ascend beyond that at which they are arrested (yaʿtakifūn). From this the reason for expressing the supplication (duʿāʾ) in terms of benefit is known, as is the aspect of its correspondence to the calling (daʿwa).

That is: these people, if you leave them with their caprices, will manifest their egos (aniyyāt), which is the identity (huwiyya) of Oneness (aḥadiyya) tinged with the lights of their loci of manifestation. They will move only toward excess and transgression, and will lead Your servants astray by calling them, through the satanic ego, out of the servanthood upon which they stand, to what is in them of the meaning of lordship, while [in reality] being servants. Thus they become bewildered and become the worst of people, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The worst of people is he upon whom the Resurrection has come to pass while he is [still] alive.' For the rightly-guiding one calls to obedience to the All-Merciful, so that they may become annihilated from the life of caprice and strip off their formal traces (rusūm), and die to their egos that veil the Real, and thereby live with the true, eternal life. But the misleading one calls to obedience to Satan, and thus draws them further into their transgression by strengthening their egotism, causing them to glimpse the secret of lordship. So they, while their caprice remains and the life of their ego and egotism persists — i.e., Oneness tinged with the color of multiplicity and the properties of contingent possibility by which they are servants — regard themselves as lords while [in fact] being servants, and thus become the worst of people: servants who are lords in their own estimation. That is the very essence of bewilderment, misguidance, and ruin — unlike the bewilderment of the Muhammadan, for that comes after the annihilation of the ego in Oneness, and the true standing [before God], and regarding oneself as sheer nothing. He, may God be pleased with him, said:

That is, if You leave them in their state, they will lead Your servants astray and bewilder them in You and in Your manifestations, taking them out of the station of their servanthood by disclosing to them the secrets of Lordship, just as it appeared to their own souls, so they manifest with selfhood (anāniyya) and become pharaonic through their manifestation by themselves.

—that is, they will bewilder them, bringing them out of servanthood (ʿubūdiyya) into what lies within it of the secrets of lordship (rubūbiyya), so that they view themselves as lords after having regarded themselves as servants; thus they become servant-lords. The servant [i.e., the author] said: The worshipers of the forms of the Names, within the veiled aspects of things, among the inhabited abodes of wretchedness—were they left to [their] passions, they would move only toward the bewildering extremities, and would settle only in cultivating elevated tracts—tracts of overwhelming veiling—and would worship nothing but multiplicity and dispersion in the idol-forms of ruinous false deities (ṭawāghīt); and they would call the servants possessed of preparedness (istiʿdād) to the perils in which they themselves are, being, against them, helpers of Satan in that. So when they see the caller of God calling to [divine] Unity and to declaring incomparability (tanzīh) with respect to delimitation, they do not leave them alone—rather they call them to enumerated multiplicity and dispersion, thereby leading them far astray and bewildering them grievously; so they perish, and cause the seekers of the Real to perish, in the wastelands of the veiling of creation, utterly drowned in the seas of differentiation, confounding for them the aspects of preponderance, distinction, and differentiation. Hence their own betterment, and the betterment of those who come after them, lies in [God's] concealing them within the depths of the earth, just as they concealed themselves from hearing the call of the [divine] Presentation—and in drowning them in the deluge of the seas of unveiling (kashf) and gathering (jamʿ), that He may mend what is in them of differentiation and fissure. As for those possessed of preparedness (istiʿdād), fit to answer Your call, they devote themselves fully to answering Your summons, and are not bewildered in the matter, and worship You for all eternity; they do not view themselves as lords, nor do they open, in their worship and servanthood, any doors unto Your lordship. He said, may God be pleased with him:

So they claim divinity and manifest with Lordship due to the overwhelming station of Unity (waḥda) upon them, while they are servants relative to their determinations (taʿayyunāt). It is not permissible for the servant to claim Lordship absolutely; hence the nobility of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, appears in his saying: "And I bear witness that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger." And ʿĪsā said: "Indeed I am the servant of God; He has given me the Book, wisdom, and prophethood." The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said: (Do not call me except by "O servant of Her," for it is the noblest of my names).

That is, they are then servants insofar as they are determined and delimited before the absolute Real, and lords over what falls under their sway and their rulings; thus they are servants and lords by both considerations.

Ibn Turka

The Shaykh, may God be pleased with him, said

Jāmī

considering their original nonexistence ("lords") considering what is within them of the secrets of Lordship. So when they look to their own essences, they know that they are servants; but when they contemplate what has become manifest within them of the secrets of Lordship, and imagine that these belong to them, they fancy themselves lords, and thus become bewildered in their affair, not knowing that they are [both] servants and lords. Moreover, when they imagine themselves lords and are then held accountable to the requirements of lordship, and are unable to fulfill them, they become bewildered by their claim to lordship. But if God, Glory be to Him, does not leave them upon the manifest of the earth of drowning, and instead restores them to its nonmanifest interior, the secrets of Lordship are drawn back toward the collective Reality and their tongues are cut off from them, so that they become realized in their servitude and are freed from the illusion of lordship
